Quoting: Anonymous Coward 996733!?? No, that is just a way to test your design. I agree the electronics you keep would likely be useless for a while. However, things like radios, batteries or a hard drive with photos or files might be worth saving. |

suvalley User ID: 996998 ![]() 06/08/2010 03:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The problem with a large EMP is this: By the time you are aware there is one, it is too late to protect anything. IOW, people expect things to just halt, cars die, phones down and so forth. By the time you figure out what happened, your electronics are fried. That's the theory anyway. Now I have to go look up copper foil tape, lol! |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 996980 ![]() 06/08/2010 03:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Can you tell me what good any of those things would be in the event of a large EMP? If everything else electric grid, cell towers ect is destroyed what could you use that you saved.Besides maybe some old fashion points to a pre 1970's cars which will be the only ones running probably. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 996231If that were to happen, we would be dealing with a completely different level of issues. To answer your question, you would need plans/preparations for alternative electricity generation. |

And the great thing is, this build would only take a few minutes to put together. 3M makes "558 copper foil tape" |

In the event that you need to put electronic things in a faraday cage to protect them from a EMP it's already at a diffrent level. |

I am not arguing the validity or reasons for saving electronics if an EMP were to hit. Just explaining "how-to" However, just a quick note. The government and military are already protected from this, so an EMP would only impact the "unprepared" Again I am happy to discuss this with you, but I think a new thread would be more appropriate. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 645073 ![]() 06/08/2010 03:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Great tip. Thank you. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 996980I heard that microwaves are also good to act as Farady cages. Anyone heard of that one too? Yes, I did read that a microwave would work. Yes, a microwave oven acts a "reverse" faraday cage. Microwave ovens are designed to protect the user from the microwaves inside, hence, sensitive electrical eguipment can be placed inside a microwave oven to protect from gamma waves outside. The microwave oven does not need to be in working order, however it must be structually intact i.e must have a door etc Worth buying a cheap, scruffy microwave oven to keep in the garage and just store torches, radio etc. |

Yeah I understand the how. Its just the why logic is not there. And certain aspects of the military and goverment are protected. However the vast majority of the infrastucture isn't. Real books with diagrams and instructions about planting and harvesting, simple medicine, hunting, food preservation ect will be what you want on hand in the event of an EMP. Your cell phone will not work. Help will not be on the way. |

If you told me this was happening tomorrow, I would not care about a faraday box, cage or microwave. I would be heading out of town, in a truck with water, food, and ammunition. Worst place to be is a city. Again, the logic of saving electronics is a completely different discussion, which I am happy to have on another thread. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 961308 ![]() 06/08/2010 04:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Do you know what wavelengths are emitted by a EMP from the sun, a nuke, a EMP bomb ? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 961308After a quick search it seems gamma rays are a lot shorter than microwaves, not sure if the sun emits gamma rays but it sounds familiar, if so forget youre microwave oven its useless. I thought I read elsewhere nukes emit all wavelengths. |

Bam. Cell phone, CDs, hard drive, batteries, and a couple whatevers would all fit. |
