Faraday Cage (simple things to keep around your house)
Today I was reading a few of threads on this site and decided to research the viability of building a simple and effective faraday cage.

I want to start by saying that I am not worried, nor do I expect a solar EMP or an EMP from anywhere else. However, I like to know things.

I began my research by reading about Michael Faraday and his design and mathematical reasoning behind the faraday cage. Next I read congressional testimony on the EMP issue and how the government shields their electrical infrastructure. Next I looked commercially available solutions and some do it yourself methods.

After this research I realized that a person could keep a few things around the house that would ensure, if necessary, they could protect important electronics. (I think what would actually be important is debatable and should be saved for another thread)

What you need:

-Cardboard Box (size depends on what you want to put in it)

-Duct tape

-Copper foil tape (or aluminum)

-Insulated base (not necessary, but why not)

How to:

You can either make a single layer or dual layer, depending you your level of paranoia.

Single layer:

-cover the outside of the box in a single, complete layer of duct tape

-cover the duct tape layer with a single, complete layer of copper foil tape

-cover the copper foil tape layer with another complete layer of duct tape

-place the box on top of the insulated base

-That's it. To test your box, place your cell phone inside and call it. If it rings, your layers were likely incomplete.

Double layer:

-Same as single layer but do the same to the inside of the box.

Let me know if you see anything I forgot.

Your can google for one. Most are commercial units, for hospitals and other industry. The few "consumer" models I found were either bulky or claimed by other sites not to work.

I was wondering if wrapping your electronics in a towel and then placing that inside the oven or microwave during an EMP event would offer much protection? Any thoughts?

No, that is just a way to test your design. I agree the electronics you keep would likely be useless for a while. However, things like radios, batteries or a hard drive with photos or files might be worth saving.

I heard that microwaves are also good to act as Farady cages. Anyone heard of that one too?

You can use anything that is non-conductive, like wood, glass etc.

Can you tell me what good any of those things would be in the event of a large EMP? If everything else electric grid, cell towers ect is destroyed what could you use that you saved.Besides maybe some old fashion points to a pre 1970's cars which will be the only ones running probably.

Re: Faraday Cage (simple things to keep around your house)
The problem with a large EMP is this: By the time you are aware there is one, it is too late to protect anything.

IOW, people expect things to just halt, cars die, phones down and so forth. By the time you figure out what happened, your electronics are fried.

That's the theory anyway.

Now I have to go look up copper foil tape, lol!

If that were to happen, we would be dealing with a completely different level of issues. To answer your question, you would need plans/preparations for alternative electricity generation.

I agree, this would only be helpful if you had advanced warning. And the great thing is, this build would only take a few minutes to put together.

So then why would you need a faraday cage for what I guess "minor events"? In the event that you need to put electronic things in a faraday cage to protect them from a EMP it's already at a diffrent level.

I am not arguing the validity or reasons for saving electronics if an EMP were to hit. Just explaining "how-to"

However, just a quick note. The government and military are already protected from this, so an EMP would only impact the "unprepared"

Again I am happy to discuss this with you, but I think a new thread would be more appropriate.

Yes, a microwave oven acts a "reverse" faraday cage. Microwave ovens are designed to protect the user from the microwaves inside, hence, sensitive electrical eguipment can be placed inside a microwave oven to protect from gamma waves outside.

The microwave oven does not need to be in working order, however it must be structually intact i.e must have a door etc

Worth buying a cheap, scruffy microwave oven to keep in the garage and just store torches, radio etc.

Yeah I understand the how. Its just the why logic is not there. And certain aspects of the military and goverment are protected. However the vast majority of the infrastucture isn't. Real books with diagrams and instructions about planting and harvesting, simple medicine, hunting, food preservation ect will be what you want on hand in the event of an EMP. Your cell phone will not work. Help will not be on the way.

I agree with you! Just not what this post is for. If you read the original post, I just looked this up because "I like to know things."

If you told me this was happening tomorrow, I would not care about a faraday box, cage or microwave. I would be heading out of town, in a truck with water, food, and ammunition. Worst place to be is a city.

Again, the logic of saving electronics is a completely different discussion, which I am happy to have on another thread.

After a quick search it seems gamma rays are a lot shorter than microwaves, not sure if the sun emits gamma rays but it sounds familiar, if so forget youre microwave oven its useless.

I thought I read elsewhere nukes emit all wavelengths.

I could build a faraday cage in 30 seconds with a shoe box and a spool of thin copper wire. Bam. Cell phone, CDs, hard drive, batteries, and a couple whatevers would all fit.
