And the night followed day And the story tellers say That the score brave souls inside For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas Neīer looked back, never feared, never cried. Donīt you hear my call though youīre many years away Donīt you hear me calling you Write your letters in the sand For the day I take your hand In the land that our grandchildren knew. In the year of ī39 came a ship in from the blue The Volunteers came home that day And they bring good news of a world so newly born Though their hearts so heavily weigh For the earth is old and grey, to a new home weīll away But my love this cannot be For so many years have gone though Iīm older but a year Your motherīs eyes in your eyes cry to me. Donīt you hear my call though youīre many years away Donīt you hear me calling you All the letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand For my life Still ahead Pity me. ---- "ī39" holds the interesting distinction of being the 39th album track originally released on a Queen album. It tells the story of a man who travels from Earth to colonize a new world and experiences the phenomenom of Einstienīs Special Theory of Relativity (which states that time slows down the closer you get to the speed of light). As such, he ages only one year as the Earth ages about 100 years, so his family and loved one are long dead upon his return, though their descendants survive. This track was written by guitarist Brian May, who was an astronomy buff. ---- The funny part is that is almost exactly what is really going on (in parable). |
