School Nutrition Bill Allocates $1 Million to Study How Government Can Restrict Food Ads Directed at Kids !!!
A recently introduced House bill, said to mirror First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, would spend $1 million to study how the government can restrict food advertisements aimed at children.

The study proposed in the “Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act” would “examine mechanisms regulating marketing in elementary and secondary schools, including Federal, State, and local policies; contracts; and sales incentives.”

The study would examine “all media through which foods and beverages are marketed to children in elementary and secondary schools,” including, but not limited to, book covers, school supplies, scoreboards, branded fundraising activities, and incidental exposure to food and beverage marketing through computer use.

Speaking at a news conference outside the Capitol last Thursday, Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the bill’s lead sponsor, said his legislation mirrors Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to reduce child obesity, and that the bill creates a “nutritional safety net” for millions of children.

Miller, the chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, said the bill would “dramatically improve the quality of meals children eat both in and out of school and in child care settings, support community efforts to reduce childhood hunger and, for the first time, establish nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools.”

But Walter Olson, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute's Center for Constitutional Studies, told CNSNews.com that the proposed legislation would expand the role of the federal government too far into the school system.

No money is needed.

The FCC can simply put it in their rules that commercials cannot be aimed at kids for foods that contain over a certain level of sugars, salt, and fats.

Why do those idiots in DC have to complicate everything?

You answered your own question ...

Because they're idiots!

If they really wanted to stop obesity, they should BAN artificial sweeteners ... especially HFCS. Your suggestion to ban commercials for the foods you listed is a good one, too.

Why its done that way it to prevent 'simple' censorship or theft of our 'rights'.

Committees are formed, and they have to offer X number of solutions to a problem. Then a bill is created and it has to pass both House and Senate, then it has to be signed by the President who maintains the Veto Option.

When it comes to freedom of speech (which this will be raised by the advertising companies) that committee will have to demonstrate that these ads are on a similar level as screaming fire in a theater full of people. In other words we are allowed free speech with limits that prevent injury or harm to others.

Many folk think that the government just passes laws at random, the reality is that before those laws are even brought to the attention of the Congress, they are put to sub-congressional committees who not only weigh the value of the law as it affects the public, but also how the law stacks against the constitution and the bill of rights.

It is a slow, expensive process which has served rather well for over 200 years to prevent the US from becoming a Dictatorship.
