Living on the edge (OP) User ID: 994058 ![]() 06/17/2010 01:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | More Dirty Details From My BP Mole Wed Jun. 16, 2010 3:02 AM PDT You know the story: Boy calls girl, girl goes to pick up boy, boy and girl go sit on a beautiful beachside deck to enjoy the night breeze and listen to the waves crash as he tells her a bunch of terrible things that are going on at an oil-spill cleanup site. Yes, I had a date with Elmer, my mole inside BP's cleanup operation, and he painted a grim picture of the conditions for both workers and wildlife at Louisiana's Elmer's Island Wildlife Refuge. First, the workers: The men on Elmer's Island don't wear respirators since BP and OSHA have thrown precaution to the wind and deemed them unnecessary. But the only type of air-monitoring equipment Elmer's ever seen on the island are little multigas meters that are not up to the job: They're designed for indoor use, clog easily, and only measure limited types of pollutants. And despite the known dangers of dispersants and the toxic chemicals in crude (I can attest that contact with the stuff washing up on the beach can burn), workers aren't even wearing protective Tyvek suits anymore. Of course, there are medics on hand to treat anyone who gets hurt or sick. Unfortunately, any worker who asks for a medic's help is automatically drug tested, which, for some, can be a powerful incentive to not report injuries. (Not that keeping a cleanup job necessarily equals getting paid: Elmer says the contractors continue to lose workers' paychecks, a problem he told me about the last time we talked and that has since been confirmed by the local papers.) Cleanup workers on these South Louisiana beaches aren't the only ones who could use more protections. What Elmer told me echoed the reports that BP isn't exactly doing everything in its power to keep track of the toll the spill is taking on wildlife. In nearby Port Fourchon, where he has also worked, there are markers to denote wildlife nesting areas, but they aren't clearly labeled and no one knows what they mean, so workers drive and trample over sensitive habitats. One day last week, Elmer and his coworkers came upon eight oiled pelicans, but though they called the official number to report their findings, no one had come to collect the birds by the time his shift ended many hours later. (A representative from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has yet to respond to my request for comment.) Workers on Elmer's have not been instructed to report dead animals for collection or autopsy. Elmer said he'd recently come upon a dead crab and, knowing no one was going to come to examine it, decided to slice it open himself. Black oil poured out....(cont.) Living on the edge (OP) User ID: 994058 ![]() 06/17/2010 01:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | BP keeps cleanup workers getting sick from pollutants out of its records, claims only two such incidents. Jun 16th, 2010 at 7:50 pm BP attempted to deny and conceal links of its oil spill to illnesses, after initial reports of oil cleanup workers who were getting sick due to extended exposure to oil and dispersants. Fishermen have complained of “severe headaches, dizziness, nausea and difficulty breathing” after working to clean up the spill, and one said BP did not provide protective equipment. But BP CEO Tony Hayward brushed off illness concerns, suggesting “food poisoning” might have been the culprit. Now, McClatchy reports on a wide disparity in government and BP records on illness complaints: Although Louisiana state records indicate that at least 74 oil spill workers have complained of becoming sick after exposure to pollutants, BP’s own official recordkeeping notes just two such incidents. BP reported a wide range of worker injuries in the period from April 22 to June 10 , from the minor — a sprained ankle, a pinched finger and a cat bite — to the more serious — three instances of workers being struck by lightning and one worker who lost part of a finger. The gap between the state data and BP’s… raises questions about whether the federal government can rely on BP to determine whether conditions remain safe for the more than 27,000 workers now engaged in cleaning up the worst oil spill in the nation’s history....cont.) Living on the edge (OP) User ID: 994058 ![]() 06/17/2010 02:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Updated 8:30 AM EDT, Wed, Jun 16, 2010 An army of 24,000 temporary workers have swarmed the Gulf Coast to help clean up the mess from the massive BP oil spill. But it is far from clear who is responsible for ensuring the safety and long-term health of those doing the critical and often dangerous grunt work. Already workers have been injured, some hospitalized. Workers are covered by a patchwork of federal, state and local agencies and regulations. The government only last week announced how worker safety efforts in the Gulf would be coordinated, more than 50 days after the rig explosion. Labor and environmental advocates say worker safety in the Gulf is precarious. The recipe for a safety disaster includes: A massive toxic spill. The rapid deployment of a vast work force over four states. Limited government resources. BP’s dismal safety record. Hot temperatures that make wearing heavy protective gear extremely uncomfortable. A large number of non-English speaking workers involved in the effort. The desire among many workers sidelined by the disaster to do any work they can. Based on past disasters, workers could become tangled in years of litigation if they suffer any injuries or other ill health effects while cleaning up the Gulf region. “We’ve been through this before,” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., referring to workers who helped clean up the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 attacks. Nadler said the government told workers at the site that they, too, were safe, but today “thousands of people are sick or dying.”....(cont.) The truth- Personally if I were a fishermen...I would understand it is over for a long time there...but if one wants to clean up-screw BP-I would not wait for their permission to clean and I would of course not get my wages replaced by them...All the more latitude it gives me to do what needs to be done Like federal monies...once a state takes that they are on the hook...since all fed taxes go from state to feds...and then state has to jump through hoops to get funding-via abiding to conditions the feds set up... The states impacted by this should not be hindered in doing what needs to be done... It is a duty...to the people of this country, to future generations, to our stewardship of the earth...a duty to throw off tyrants if they obstruct us from doing what needs to be done. BP is no one to me...I rarely drive...but I have been to the Gulf, I have bought food from the Gulf, I know many who live near the Gulf or on it...many leaving as well...many of them rode bicycles more than drove...but they are still paying the price for bp to he11 with BP-let them return, home, in he11 |

I would advise as many others to do the SAME !!! I would Document as best I could if BP fired me for continuing to wear a respirator. I would get together with Others that were Fired and get a Class Action Suit against BP. And Expedite Independent Air Quality Monitoring ASAP!!! Independent Monitoring of Air Quality is the KEY. Need a Court Order to do such ASAP!!! I've Not a Litigant GUY - Never sued anybody for Anything. I suspect that Court Orders is the ONLY way to get BP going down the Correct Path.
