A drug that could make you live 30 percent longer - but only if you're fertile
Want to live into your hundreds? If you're young and fertile, you have to decide now whether you want to take a drug that will extend your life by a few decades.

Researchers at Stanford Medical School have discovered that blocking the activity of certain genes can extend the lives of roundworms by up to 30 percent - but only if the worms are fertile. This is further confirmation of what many scientists had already suspected, which is that the key to life extension is tied to the reproductive system. Geneticist Anne Brunet, co-author on the new study, explained:

It makes a sort of sense that the reproductive system would be involved in life span, since that is really the only ‘immortal' part of an organism. In that context, the body is just the mortal envelope.

She and a team of scientists discovered that roundworms lived longer if they blocked the action of several different genes, most notably a gene called Ash-2. This gene is special because it regulates how other genes get expressed - it's a kind of master-switch gene. When Ash-2 is silenced, several genes related to the germline - cells used for reproduction - remain silent too. And somehow this extends life.

Bunet added:

We still don't know exactly how this works mechanistically, but we've shown that the presence of the germline is absolutely essential for this longevity extension to happen.

In other words: As long as you're still fertile, with a functioning germline, shutting down Ash-2 might help you live longer. If you're a worm. But there is enough overlap between human and worm DNA that this could provide a key to tinkering with human lifespans too.

I wouldn't want to live any longer than my body allows, personally.

It does sound interesting though. I would like to see how productive future applications on human would be.

WTH would anybody want to live that long? As most people get older they realize that they don't want to. Besides. if the earth is already over-populated, then having people live much longer lives isn't going to help the situation. You folks that want to are free to try it if you want, just saying count me out.

In a normal human lifespan, just when we are starting to get good at a career and have a couple solid skills, and understand a little about the world, our bodies start to decline.

It's like we're still in childhood when we start declining toward death. Maybe that's why life seems so tense. There's no time of stability, just not enough time.

It would be nice to have some time of stability, understanding and maturity.

It used to not be that old, they did not get lonely because they could still work and there were others who were as old.

Take a look at who is living loner, and who is not, this may explain something.

It our life style that is the problem and the food we eat. Modern life is not good for age, good for a lot of bad things and that a fact.

I had long people in my family a lot of them lived ten years and more over a hundred years old. My mom was in her nineties when she passed, her oldest sister was 99 years old.

I used to go look at grave stone, just to check the history and people who lived in my area. This is where I could also see the life expectancy was not better to except for epidemics that killed a lot of people. It was not unusual for people to live over a hundred years old.

I will state they not studying the correct thing. If people lived in cities the life span could be lower than in the country where there was work and fresh air, fresh grown food and nothing but natural food. This is part of lifespan, not extension, no, why they life span has become shorter in modern times.

Minus flu and epidemics people live long than today, this is the problem of their study. They did have big families the did not keep having children, they had their families and raise them. I known some that was still working past the 90s and up.

Whatever happened to the old GLP and people who were conspiratorial minded?

All of us who went through Conspiracy 101 KNOW that the powers that be are sterilizing people around the world and giving us cancer for decades now.

So do you really think they would allow anyone with a 30% longer lifespan to ALSO have children?

Who's going to be the majority of people getting this special drug? White people, of course. And if any other color, it's a win win for them either way.

... what's the point? Youth is what matters...if your body shuts down at 80, do you really want to live in that state into your hundreds? If they could extend your 20s 30 percent longer, that would be different...

Well, yes. If they are selectively breeding children while simultaneously preventing the masses from having children at all, then they would want their Breeder prototypes to be productive for a longer period of time.

Re: A drug that could make you live 30 percent longer - but only if you're fertile
The way I understand this is...if your body continues to have a strong desire to reproduce then you will live much longer. If you are not fertile then that signal will not be sent to the brain... and you die sooner.

Many 100 year old people were asked what's the secret to long life. They say... i drink one glass of wine per day, or... I never smoked. But what they forgot to tell you is they never got laid that much in the last 50 years and their bodies really really wanted sex....but got none. So the body carries on and on hoping to reproduce again.

That's why when two old people were married together their entire life they almost always die together. Usually no more than 3 months apart.
