All I can do with some of SS's posts is to search Google to try to figure out what it's all about. The word was coined by Arthur Koestler in his book The Ghost in the Machine (1967, p. 48)...
From this parable, Simon concludes that complex systems will evolve from simple systems much more rapidly if there are stable intermediate forms than if there are not; the resulting complex systems in the former case will be hierarchic. In and of itself, it is a whole, but it is part of a more complex whole. this is the PATTERN of reality. Read Tenet 5 for a quick example...
