"It is a MYSTERY" 75 JUVENILE STARLINGS found Dead in OSGOOD INDIANA | |
FEELING HELPLESS User ID: 772130 United States 06/19/2010 06:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OSGOOD, Ind.-- - Residents along North Street in Osgood, Indiana started finding dead birds in their yards on Tuesday. At first they thought it was to the recent storms that came through the area, "I thought it was lightning," explained Devota Dean. Dean cleaned her yard and on Wednesday found more dead birds, "We said, 'Wait a minute. There's something wrong here,'" Dean explained. The neighbors reported the incidents to the Ripley County Health Department. Friday morning, health and department of natural resources officials began collecting evidence. They found 75 birds dead with one very sick survivor. Tony Starkey had his fears of what was causing the birds to die, "With having children, you worry about West Nile or bird flu." Between the DNR officer and Wayne Peace from the health department, they figured what ever is killing the birds is not the West Nile Virus, because deaths associated with that disease are sporadic and not large groupings. Investigators do not believe it could be Avian Flu because there have been zero warnings or reports of it anywhere in the state. It has been preliminarily determined that only one species is affected, a juvenile starling. They are optimistic that the flocking group of birds got a hold of some bad or spoiled feed. They will not know what killed the birds or if it affects people until results from tests are finished in Indianapolis. More info at: [link to www.wcpo.com] |
