Maybe it evolved that way because of men's distrusting, paranoid nature, and not a (percieved) promiscuity?

Just from personal experience. Men always want to protect their "property",and they think of women as their propety in some regard. (It is a deifferent kind of jealousy than a jealousy a woman feels, which is more an emotional sense of betrayal.) Men can't stand to hear about other lovers their woman might have had (even if they themselves have been with lots.) They want to be the top dog, so to speak, and are always (even subconsciously) on the look out for uspurpers. That is why they are distrusting--of their women but also of other men.
