Are we back in the 1950s?
I feel like the political and social climate today mirrors that of the 1950s.

In the 1950s the blues became electrified upbeat music called rock n roll that people seemed more interested in dancing to than concentrating on lyrics. Much of the older generation dismissed that music as evil and devoid of substance. Today the music has taken an intensely electric dance form with simple lyrics. Even voices are electrified. A lot of people are complaining about how the new music is evil and meaningless. When I was a teen in the 90s I don't remember a lot of complaining from the older generation about 90s music. I was too young in the 80s to notice the adults saying anything about 80s music.

McCarthyism was all the rage then. People were quick to demonize their enemies and label them communist. Today it seems like a people feel that the majority of the politicians are communist along with a majority of citizens who support this regime. It seems that if someone holds political views that some people don't agree with, they are labeled communist.

People were freaking out over imminent nuclear destruction...building shelters and preparing for life after a nuclear holocaust. Maybe only GLP does that these days, but still...

Racial tension started to grow in intensity and eventually lead to a climax in the early to mid 1960s. We again got racial tension on the rise because of immigration and what's perceived as reserve racism.

The television became a consumer product so a good chunk of Americans became wrapped up in a manufactured electronic world. Today we got Ipods, do it all cell phones. We got a world dominated my electronic products that consume the souls of many of us.

I didn't live any the 50s, but the events going on right now remind me of what I read in the history books.

Whats next? Maybe we are going back in time. We gotta go through a huge world war to mirror the 40s and then a major depression to mirror the 30s then eventually work our way back to the stone ages.

Yeah, but the OP did a good job of pointing out some similarities. But, OP,they are right it's nothing like the 50s. It doesn't feel like it at all. To me, it seems like the 20s and 30s. It just feels that way, but I don't know, I wasn't alive then.

There were a lot Marxists in the 50s, at least in Europe and Asia. They're long gone, except for China.

Well, in the 80s we had fun but it was a fun that came out of the realization of technology and music and a world that was more at peace. Walls fell down literally and figuratively as self-exploration (not the 60s kind) and self-expression was raw and open and.. fun.

This version of the 80s has the same look and feel (leather, punkish hair, similar electronica music, etc) but the fun seems 'fake' or 'rushed'. I think there may be many people in various industries that are reliving/rebuilding the 80s they loved, but it's a carbon copy of it. The fun is 'different' and I'm not sure how. Even the kids sense it.

OP, you obviously never lived during the 50s. I'd take them any day over what we have now. We used to laugh at all those tv shows with "normal" folks panicking over events. I never knew anyone with a fall-out shelter. Aquarius is right...no comparison.

I agree. And I'll go even further than just the rhealm of music..... People are still having 'fun' however fake it seems, but now there is an apprehension....like it is fake...like everybody is posing.....saying "look at me" im having sooo much fun.....and it almost seems ....planned.

The 80s fun wasnt planned....and most of it was ...real fucking fun!!! organic by nature....look at the band poison!!! that was fun and thats all they were doing...same as motley crue....

but today, the "FUN" is mixed in with all this REAL SHIT going on.....wars, sept 11, terrorism, recession turning into depression, climate change, Hurricanes, the death of the middle class, and now..the GOM. it goes on and on....how can anybody have FUN, when all this shit is going on??

The younger generation, like 15-25, is going to turn out some really funky things...thats my guess....

From ED TV (1999)

I feel that Ed (TV) is the apotheosis of a prevailing American syndrome. It used to be that someone became famous because they were special. Now people are considered special just for being famous. Fame, itself, is now a moral good in this country. It's its own virtue.
