Doesn't sound like they're doing anything other than what they've always done. Military's been in the North Georgia Mountains for YEARS conducting "exercises". I've come across them myself when I've vacationed there. They didn't bother me and I didn't ask any questions. Nothing new.

A friend told me a few weeks ago he was driving from outside Flagstaff, Ar. to Albuquerque, NM and it took 3 hours to travel what normaly took 15" and all the ramps between were closed with officers in place. The official reason was "high winds." Granted the winds have blown more and up to 99 mph here in the mountains, this year than in the last 45 according to my father...

Dude...did you get the part where she was walking along with this unit and asking alot of questions? She (OP) already put herself into jeopardy..i'm sure they were watching her like a hawk to waiting for her to go too far...so they can arrested her. Do you really think they would've let her just reach into her pocket for a camera to start taking their pictures? They might've shot her thinking she was going for a gun? Where's your head at?

It is the interchange at I-16 and Dean Forest Rd. Look at street view, at the on/off ramps until you see the orange and white gates. You may have to look at more than one street view. The pic I have saved is too big to post...over the spec limits.

Gates make pretty good sense for making all lanes the same direction during evacuation.

If the soldiers didn't speak english I might worry...

The ramps to on and off exits I-16 in South Georgia were put up about ten years ago. Big threads on glp about it at the time. Official explanation is to make both sides of I-16 one-way leaving the coast for evacuations in case of hurricanes.

It's never been used for that.

South Carolina may gave wished they had such a system set up for evacuations where one hurricane left people backed up on interstates, state and county roads for hours and hours, drying to get out of dodge (so-to-speak). The SC State Highway Patrol got crosswise of the state DOT (Department of Transportation) over who was boss of the roads and the Highway Patrol refused to one-way the traffic leaving the beach and everybody got stuck in an impossible mess. People who could turned around when back home and weathered the hurricane in place. Big mess! People running out of gas, no water to drink, peeing and shitting on the side of the road, passing out from the heat, and generally a PO'd population.
