You may be on to something there. If we consider they have this huge lens to reflect visions from. They have had plenty of time to practice. This thing is one light year away. hmmmm

Cosmic strings produce double images when light hitting loops of gravity are distorted, as if passing through a giant lens in space. The phenomenon was predicted by Einstein in the 1930s and first found in 1979, Turner said. Five cosmic strings have been identified since, but none of these so-called gravitational lenses has been as powerful as this one.

What Woodie says about a "giant artificial reef" in the GOM reminds me of my first cruse via Google Earth along the beach line, I saw a man pointing out into the gulf, so I scanned over and there was this very large green mass sitting on the surface. I just wish that I had known then how to save the pictures, I've looked many times since, but haven't been able to find it again.

For the first time in almost 20 years, northern autumn is beginning on the night of a full Moon. The coincidence sets the stage for a "Super Harvest Moon" and a must-see sky show to mark the change of seasons. I bet this has some weight with the atrological types.

Hello, just home from work waiting for dinner to cook, few pages behind still. I was going to post this last night thinking it was connected to 2jpl from woodys' post (where he had put 2 dots between a sentence), and then realised the 2 was just reffering to the authors.

Hence my editing for stupidity statement.

today I see Dhlos has posted this:

Strategic Defense Initiative Organization

The initial focus of the strategic defense initiative was a nuclear explosion-powered X-ray laser designed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory by a scientist named Peter L. Hagelstein[5] who worked with a team called 'O Group', doing much of the work in the late 1970s and early 1980s. O Group was headed by physicist Lowell Wood, a protégé and friend of Edward Teller, the "father of the hydrogen bomb".

The High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility (HELSTF) is located at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. HELSTF is designated as the Department of Defense (DoD) National Test Facility for high energy laser test and evaluation. HELSTF is the home of the Mid Infrared Advanced Chemical Laser (MIRACL), the United States' most powerful laser.

Comparison with Large Ground-based Facilities
High Angular resolution coupled with high sensitivity is increasingly a
science-driven requirement for astronomy. The 20-m to 40-m groundbased
telescopes using Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Systems will
redefine the capabilities of ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. But
there remain unassailable advantages of space in the UVO+NIR range:
• Wide-fields (several arcmin) or panoramic imaging (tens of arcmin)
• Stable, high Strehl ratios (>90%)
• Precise wavefront sensing and control
• Highly stable PSFs (<2% variability spatially and temporally)
• Ultra precise photometry (<0.0001 mag) and astrometry
We compare the “time to reach a S/N=10” as a function of spectral
resolution for a 30-m ground-based telescope with that for 8-m and 16-m
space telescopes. All assumed to have the same instrumental and
detector performance. The 30-m ground-based telescope is assumed to
be diffraction limited at wavelengths longer than 1 μm

There is a new weapon that has been speculated to have caused the explosion on a rig in the GOM, but thought to have been created to take out the nuclear power plant in Iran.

Thread: Cyber "super weapon" designed to hit Iran nuclear plant.

The cyber worm, called Stuxnet, has been the object of intense study since its detection in June. As more has become known about it, alarm about its capabilities and purpose have grown. Some top cyber security experts now say Stuxnet's arrival heralds something blindingly new: a cyber weapon created to cross from the digital realm to the physical world – to destroy something.

Unusual illnesses: Curiouser and curiouser

Imagine waking up with a foreign accent. Or feeling you're shrinking like Alice in Wonderland. Sounds funny? Not if happens to you, says Samuel Muston

Tuesday, 21 September 2010

"The ability to sit at a piano and croon with an accent like Charles Aznavour's is for many the acme of seductiveness. And people will pay to ensure their French accent is as perfect as their command of the Gallic idiom. But what if you woke one morning to find your usual Liverpudlian tones supplanted by a heavy French accent?

For those with a little-known neurological condition called Foreign Accent Syndrome, that question is not an idle consideration but a day-to-day reality. Kay Russell, a 49-year-old from Gloucestershire found herself subject to a media maelstrom last week when it was reported that she woke from an afternoon nap to find her clipped Home Counties accent supplanted by a distinctly Gallic lilt. Having endured a series of hemiplegic migraines that caused minor brain damage, it is highly unlikely that her former accent will return. "
