Hence my editing for stupidity statement. today I see Dhlos has posted this: Strategic Defense Initiative Organization Quoting: dhlos 1105356The initial focus of the strategic defense initiative was a nuclear explosion-powered X-ray laser designed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory by a scientist named Peter L. Hagelstein[5] who worked with a team called 'O Group', doing much of the work in the late 1970s and early 1980s. O Group was headed by physicist Lowell Wood, a protégé and friend of Edward Teller, the "father of the hydrogen bomb". [link to en.wikipedia.org] ...................................... The 20-m to 40-m groundbased telescopes using Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Systems will redefine the capabilities of ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. But there remain unassailable advantages of space in the UVO+NIR range: • Wide-fields (several arcmin) or panoramic imaging (tens of arcmin) • Stable, high Strehl ratios (>90%) • Precise wavefront sensing and control • Highly stable PSFs (<2% variability spatially and temporally) • Ultra precise photometry (<0.0001 mag) and astrometry We compare the “time to reach a S/N=10” as a function of spectral resolution for a 30-m ground-based telescope with that for 8-m and 16-m space telescopes. All assumed to have the same instrumental and detector performance. The 30-m ground-based telescope is assumed to be diffraction limited at wavelengths longer than 1 μm [link to www.stsci.edu] |

Or feeling you're shrinking like Alice in Wonderland. Sounds funny? Not if happens to you, says Samuel Muston Tuesday, 21 September 2010 "The ability to sit at a piano and croon with an accent like Charles Aznavour's is for many the acme of seductiveness. And people will pay to ensure their French accent is as perfect as their command of the Gallic idiom. But what if you woke one morning to find your usual Liverpudlian tones supplanted by a heavy French accent? For those with a little-known neurological condition called Foreign Accent Syndrome, that question is not an idle consideration but a day-to-day reality. Kay Russell, a 49-year-old from Gloucestershire found herself subject to a media maelstrom last week when it was reported that she woke from an afternoon nap to find her clipped Home Counties accent supplanted by a distinctly Gallic lilt. Having endured a series of hemiplegic migraines that caused minor brain damage, it is highly unlikely that her former accent will return.
