The Earth’s atmosphere is much bigger than previously thought, extending far beyond the Moon, a team of scientists have revealed. The amazing discovery was made thanks to data that has been sitting unexamined for over 20 years.
We now know that the atmosphere surrounding our planet stretches 630,000km (391,464 miles) away and is 50 times the diameter of Earth, thanks to the discovery and analysis of decades-old data by scientists at Russia’s Space Research Institute.

I feel dumber for even having had listened to this mindless drivel. Yes, the Earth's atmosphere does in fact extend for thousands of miles, but it's remotely close to what this retard of a YouTuber is describing. The Earth's atmosphere roughly as thick as it is where we breath on Earth upwards about ten miles up. From there there's pretty much a steep drop off on oxygen and air density. A hundred plus miles up and the Earth's atmosphere is so thin anything with high enough of an Earth parallel velocity will orbit the Earth unless if it's of or exceeds Earth escape velocity. At a thousand or so miles the air is so incredibly thin that it might as not be there, but there's enough to be quantifiable.

DW, I agree with you regarding the YT'ber, but disagree with you regarding the actual information.

But extending out the 'known' atmospheric limit, and not just basing our knowledge on the part important to us, as in the breathable atmosphere, we change the way we approach the planet. Quite literally, and also figuratively.

By changing a mind set, new discoveries can be made.

How many rumours, articles and threads have you read regarding sightings of some kind of living creature in the atmosphere? Astronauts have reported them. Some like giant amoebas. Well an extended atmosphere might account for a living biosphere for non-oxygen breathing/metabolising life forms that can exist in that low gravity, low hydrogen environment.

Only recently has this kind of thinking allowed for a decent explanation of why the sky is blue >> noble gasses excited by solar radiation. The sideways step is that whilst the sun produces light and radiation that we feel as heat, the noble gasses in our atmosphere (and now beyond) get excited and glow a light blue colour, and from our perspective on the planet at dusk or dawn, glow oranges and reds, which we have perceived as sunrise/set.

That's a huge shift in thinking. The sun doesnt make the light and blue sky, our own planet's noble gasses in the upper and outer atmosphere, in conjunction with the magnetosphere is what creates our DAY light. So sunlight and day light are different. One is cosmic, one is Earth-centric.

When we stop seeing Earth as gas>>rock>>liquid and see it as a whole, for core to outer-outer atmosphere all kinds of new thinking opens up, including detection of all kinds of interactions with things in space.
