“Pillars of light” appeared again in the province of Sulu this year, and were captured in several photos shared by netizens.

According to a certain Amarkhan Jidara, who shared several photos of the spectacular dance of lights in the night sky, the latest celestial show they witnessed was last Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 7 p.m.

Jidara said residents were awestruck at the sight of lights in the sky. Sulu folks claim they have been seeing the lights for quite sometime already, appearing once or twice a year.

Local Tausugs call the lights “Lansuk-Lansuk” or candles. But Tausugs have opposing beliefs about the appearance of the lights. Some think it brings bad luck or tragedy, while others look at it as a sign of good luck.

PAGASA explained that the phenomenon is caused by moonlight reflecting off ice crystals in the clouds.

Thanks for posting this.
Not sure why you deleted your original post...thought it was very interesting and thought provoking.
Btw,for what it's worth, I have a very detailed map of Antarctica from 1963 which does NOT show that island.

Cool news item!! and topical!!

Rare footage released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) last week brought to life tales of aquatic monsters in murky waters. The 28-second video captured a juvenile giant squid's tentacles slowly creeping toward the camera in the Gulf of Mexico.

NOAA said the squid was about 10 to 12 feet long and it was discovered about 100 miles southeast of New Orleans Wednesday. The squid appeared to wrap its tentacles around the NOAA's underwater stealth camera called the Medusa before quickly swimming away. Scientists cited the creature's behavior as a normal reaction any animal would have to what, at first, appeared to be prey.

Something goes BEZERK in the Arctic Ocean!!! A walrus defending her cubs sank a Russian Navy boat!!

Humans have long known that it's inadvisable to mess with Mother Nature. And, as a group of researchers from the Russian Geographical Society just learned, it's also apparently inadvisable to mess with a mother walrus.

The scientists were aboard a Russian Navy tugboat known as the Altai on an expedition to the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean this week right before the unusual human-animal interaction occurred. They boarded a small rubber landing craft and were en route to the shore to study its flora and fauna when a female walrus attacked, sinking the vessel.

those that produce red tides — may finally have met their match. At the University of Delaware, researchers have invented an application to keep these toxic organisms in check, and without harming other sea life. UD marine scientist Kathryn Coyne, who led the work, calls the invention a “magic bullet” for red tide, and it is indeed small, yet powerful.

holy smokes!!! look at this!!

The term "electric bacteria" may bring a lot of images to mind — maybe a post-apocalyptic scenario where electrified bacteria doom our species to extinction. But the reality is more benign and potentially revolutionary.

Before we get into electric bacteria, let's first take a quick refresher science course. All organisms, like humans, use electrons — small negatively charged-particles and one of three subatomic particles that make an atom. Humans get electrons from food, which then exit through the oxygen we breathe. Electrons need to move. If they don't, an organism will die.

Now, back to electric bacteria.

"[Electric bacteria] harvest the energy by harvesting the electrons from whatever they're eating, and instead of using the electron energy, the electric energy to grow faster, they can use it to export the electrons to the outside," says Dr. Ken Nealson. He discovered Shewanella oneidensis, the first identified electric bacteria.

"Bacteria can eat all these kinds of nasty things that we call pollution. And that's what they do for a living, they eat almost any kind of organic material, including human waste water."

This discovery was spurred by a question about the metal content of Oneida Lake in New York, and has since evolved into a new field of research that's changed the concept of biofuel and could alter the future of energy production. Nealson explains that when these bacteria in Oneida Lake exported these electrons to rocks, they would dissolve the minerals, removing these metals from the water. He later learned they could replace the rocks with an electrode — a conductor for electricity.

"The bacteria swim up to that electrode, they eat whatever you give them to eat, and they pass the electrons. Basically, they're using the electrode as an oxygen substitute ... Now, if you just put that in a device, you can feed the bacteria on one side of the fuel cell and all the electrons go to the other side," which will power the device," Nealson explains.

more on Shewanella bacteria!!!

Researchers in China have integrated living microbes with electrical components to create a ‘bio-battery.’ They published their findings in the journal Nature Communications. Photosynthetic microbes in nature can convert light into nutrients, which are effectively a store of energy.

Researchers at the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences questioned if there was a possibility of manipulating photosynthetic bacteria such that they could convert light into electrical power instead—what is known as a biophotovoltaic system (BPV). BPV is more environmentally friendly and potentially more cost-effective than semiconductor-based photovoltaics (PV), given the toxicity and hard-to-recycle nature of PV materials.

However, the power densities of BPV systems reported to date have been low, since photosynthetic microorganisms have a weak capacity to transfer electrons outside cells.

To circumvent this problem, the researchers created a two-species microbial consortium comprising photosynthetic cyanobacteria and the exoelectrogenic bacteria Shewanella. Exoelectrogenic bacteria have the ability to transfer electrons outside their cell bodies.

In this microbial consortium, cyanobacteria capture solar energy and fix carbon dioxide, synthesizing D-lactate. Shewanella then produce electricity by oxidizing D-lactate, thus creating a constrained electron flow from photons to D-lactate, then to electricity.

Through genetic manipulation, as well as manipulation of the growth medium and device, the two very different microorganisms worked together effectively, the researchers reported.

Their BPV system generated a power density of 150 mW·m-2 in a temporal separation setup, which is approximately one order of magnitude greater than previous BPV systems. Read more from Asian Scientist Magazine at: [link to www.asianscientist.com (secure)]
