it wasnt just about slaves, it was part of the reason but not solely for slaves. besides those slaves are the only reason america became so powerful. moaran.

The Abolitionist movement in the United States had its roots in the seventeenth century. In 1775 the first anti-slavery society was established in Philadelphia, and the Pennysylvania legislature passed the first emancipation act in 1780, followed shortly thereafter by four other northeastern states. Slavery was banned in the Northwest Territory with the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. This act essentially divided the union into two belts, with a northern area that was free of slaves, and a southern belt where slavery remained legal.

I was a "promise" to free the slaves only in states that seceded ... states like Maryland that was forced to stay in the union by Lincoln usurping the Constitution were not effected by said proclamation.
