The spirit of O'sensei, and of Aikido, is to gently take hold of that fist, and to hold it, cradle it, in fact. To sense it, to capture it, to bind it like an indian child bound in a papoose.

Not to make them fall, not to break a bone, no, these are not the goals of true budo. The warrior's spirit seeks harmony and preservation. The fool spirit seeks glorious death of all parties, and that leads to suffering. Let men have their glories elsewhere in life, not in hand to hand combat, for that is vain glory.

Consider that Bruce Lee, right before he died, was studying O'Sensei's work. Yes, even in his one lone interview, you see Bruce grudgingly mention "Aikido, whatever" --Because he is at a key moment in his life as a Chinese fighter: He must acknowledge the Japanese.

It is difficult for Chinese Kung Fu like Yip Man (Bruce or Jun Fan was his pupil) to acknowledge O'sensei. Yet, if you observe win-chun against Aikido, we see a softness of true budo, in both forms.

Both Yip Man, and his pupil, seek to strike the rising fist, the thrown punch of the enemy, with softness and gentleness. The main difference would that Aikidoka would grab the fist whereas grabbing is not the way of the Chinese boxer. No, the Chinese boxer would trap but he won't grab. And yet, we see how Bruce modified Kung Fu with his grabbing techniques --he was willing to use anything to win, not just remain Chinese in his perceptions. He was true budo, like O'sensei and Kano and Yip Man, all of these sought to rise higher, in their contest with the thrown fist of the enemy.

Then, comes the modern day. We have Chinese goofball Jackie-Chan, who is quite charming, but not considered Budo. On the other hand we have UFC meathead Brock Lesnar and so forth, who think they are 'fighters' or 'wrestlers' and yet Brock L. would be handled by true budo as if he were just a dumb puppy. Therefore I say that Jackie Chan is probably the true budo of our time.

Consider that struggle itself, is outmoded. Therefore J. Chan is the new sort of budo, how do we remain lethal, yet learn to laugh?

Also please consider the personal injuries Mr. Chan has suffered in his life due to a desire to entertain us. Yes, he is clownish but probably could defend himself or someone else if asked to do so. If you ask him he'd be all "Oh no I am not a fighter really." and yet we see Drunken Style to be so entertaining (especially against the stern Japanese overloards) that we are charmed, and therefore, disarmed. Hat's off to you, Jackie Chan, all the Yodas and shimmering spirits acknowledge the jester as the true disarmer.

I have humbly tried to argue for a new form of Aikido, combined with drunken style. I call it, "Drunkido". Unfortunately the only person I've told this idea is my wife, and she just looks at me like I am crazy. But this idea could really work!

See, Aikido is really uptight, though massively full of love. And Drunken Kung Fu is the grappling-acceptable form of Chinese martial arts, and it is the anti-thesis of Aikido, i.e. it is not uptight, it takes itself utterly non-serious. That is why I love it. Actually if you take a look at drunken style fighting you'll see you can easily get hurt in the ankles and such by swaying, and in this way, Drunken style exposes a lot of the weaknesses of Aikido. The Japanese wants to be firmly grounded with Earth, hence the Judo, karate, Aikido ideas are all about that. Wheres, Chinese spirit seems to be more of sky, and flight, and leaping. This is why Chinese respect drunken Kung Fu but there is no drunken Judo or Karate. Earth and Sky in struggle, you see?

So yes, as an American crazy person, I see Drunkido(tm), a merging of both Aikido and Drunken Style Kung Fu, to be the martial art of the future.

I have also thought of other modifications to Aikido like having Yoda (from Star Wars) at the head of the dojo, as well as O'sensei. I think he would be okay with it. He seemed to really have a good sense of humor. And Yoda was also decent with the sword, and had good relations with the Wookies. It is not easy to achieve such good relations with the Wookies and O'sensei would have to agree. So my ideas are defensible I think.

Also, drunken style by its nature, means that you do not drink booze at all, so only tee-totallers and alchohol-abstainers can practice Drunkido. I am adamant about this rule and I think true drunken style follows this code: We mock alcohol, by abstaining, and turning its forms into combat.
