Re: Hot dog eating champion facing criminal charges
Takeru Kobayashi, a former hot dog eating champion, is facing criminal charges after he jumped on stage at an annual international competition and wrestled with police as a rival was being declared the victor.

Nicknamed 'The Tsunami', Kobayashi of Japan disrupted the awards ceremony of the annual contest in Coney Island, New York, just as his rival, Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, was being presented with the winner's "mustard belt" for the fourth year running.

Mr Chestnut, from California, had won by eating 54 hot dogs in 10 minutes but had never had to compete against Mr Kobayashi, the sixth time champion, because the latter was involved in a contract dispute with the event's organisers.

Mr Kobayashi, the world number three in the pursuit, had said that he wanted to take part in the July 4th event and his sudden appearance on stage was met by chants of "Let him eat! Let him eat!" from the crowd.

However, after grabbing a police barricade and refusing to let go, he was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Prosecutors said he had been charged with obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

The Tsunami, 32, had refused to sign an agreement with Major League Eating, the contest's owner, because he said he wanted to be free to enter competitions held by other organisations.

The event drew between 40,000 and 50,000 spectators. Richard Shea, president of Major League Eating, described the stage invasion as "kind of unfortunate and maybe sad and certainly disruptive".

He said his organisation, which bars competitors from taking part in events in which rival hot dog brands are eaten, was attempting to "help the sport advance safely and maintain its integrity".

A spokesman for Mr Kobayashi, who now lives in New York, said he only eats hot dogs in training but generally "eats healthy".

Mr Chestnut, who wins $20,000 (£13,200) prize money, said he was disappointed with his performance and had been aiming for a record 70 dogs in 10 minutes.

"I was dehydrated going in," he said, adding that he had not been consuming liquids in order to leave his stomach emptier.

From ED TV (1999)

I feel that Ed (TV) is the apotheosis of a prevailing American syndrome. It used to be that someone became famous because they were special. Now people are considered special just for being famous. Fame, itself, is now a moral good in this country. It's its own virtue.
