You say you want a REVOLUTION? one rancher, how many have died in Detroit? oh that's right, this is just about mexicans, my bad. phoenix actually is very much lower than Houston, NYC, Detroit, Dallas, Orlando, LA, i could go on, the problem in arizona is political. Brewer wants to enforce this law, which is a welcome mat for violence, so that when the cops and citizens start dropping like flies, as innevitably they will, they can rally people to throw out democrats. simple as pie, good plan for the repubs, but horrible mistake for all americans. let's throw underpaid police officers under the bus, who already have it bad enough in their communities dealing with trust, this is just a moronic attempt to stop a real problem, although the problem is nowhere near as bad as they say. people just don't care to hear the truth, they must always be in fear of something. One type of business is booming, however: kidnapping. Over the past few years, Phoenix has acquired a dubious reputation as America’s kidnapping capital. State and federal statistics show that most types of crime have dropped in the Phoenix area in recent years. On the other hand, kidnapping has surged from 48 reported cases in Maricopa County in 2004, to 366 in 2008 and 359 the year before. Law enforcement authorities say the vast majority of kidnappings in the Phoenix area stem from a single source: the illicit drug traffic coming north from the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Approximately half of all the marijuana seized along the U.S.-Mexico border is taken along our state’s 370-mile border. Sinaloa sits along the Pacific Coast, a few hours south of Arizona. It’s where most Mexican drug cartels were formed and where kidnappers began nabbing victims in order to get debts paid. They soon expanded their victim pool by including local merchants, prominent citizens and others in order to extract hefty ransoms from the victims’ families and business associates. Over time, the kidnappings have migrated north, carrying a wave of related crimes, including shootings and home invasions. Though murders in Maricopa County are down overall, the wave of Mexican drug-related kidnappings and killings has officials alarmed. They want to act now to prevent the sort of violence plaguing Mexico, where over 6,000 people were killed in drug-related activities in 2008 Snip [link to laht.com] Figures Show Surge in Kidnappings in Mexico MEXICO CITY – Criminal complaints filed with police about kidnappings rose 90 percent in Mexico during the first three years of conservative President Felipe Calderon’s term, the Milenio newspaper reported over the weekend, citing official statistics. A total of 2,593 kidnapping complaints were filed during conservative President Vicente Fox’s 2000-2006 term, while 2,455 kidnappings were reported in 2007-2009, the first three years of the Calderon administration, which started on Dec. 1, 2006. The number of kidnappings reported annually nearly doubled from 595 in 2006 to 1,181 last year, reaching an average of just over three per day, “well above the level registered in countries known for their high incidence of this crime, such as Colombia,” Milenio said. Abductions, according to National Development Plan, or PND, figures, increased by 40 percent from 2008 to 2009, going from 838 to 1,181. Crimes are rarely reported in Mexico because citizens view police as being corrupt or incompetent, considering it a waste of time and even dangerous to call authorities. Official figures indicate that the percentage of common crimes solved in the past few years was low. Both federal and non-federal crimes, according to the PND, have risen in the past three years. Murders have risen markedly, with 22,750 killings blamed on organized crime groups since Calderon took office, a figure that is well above those registered under Fox and other presidents. Mexico is experiencing the most violent period in its history in terms of organized crime, analysts say. Kidnappings are of particular concern because they affect all social classes. Marches and protests have been held recently to press officials to do something about crime. Calderon, state governors, lawmakers, judges and civic activists unanimously approved a 75-point plan in August 2008 to combat organized crime. The National Accord for Security, Justice and Legality called for rooting out corruption in law enforcement and the judiciary, building more secure prisons, better managing spending on public safety and requiring the registration of all cell phones, but it has not put a dent in the crime rate. Ciudad Juarez, located across the border from El Paso, Texas, has become Mexico’s murder capital amid a turf war among rival drug cartels. Mexico City and neighboring Mexico are also hotbeds for crime. EFE |
