I know it's not of much comfort, but I am a fairly young man - let's just say "middle-aged."

I had already had 2 stents placed from 2 previous heart attacks (they wanted to place more, but was impossible to get to areas safely).

About a month ago, I had similar chest discomfort as previous times, so I drove myself to the hospital (mistake), and figured, at worst, I'd need some more stents. After the catheterization, the cardiologist informed me I needed immediate open-heart surgery, and likely triple bypass if they can technically get the third artery in place.

I won't go into the whole story (it's actually fairly interesting, as I'm in medicine and knew everything that was going on - including the mistakes and things that did go wrong) - but suffice it to say I had my surgery on Monday afternoon, awake and talking to my dad on the phone Monday night, in a chair the day after surgery, and discharged/home late on Friday morning.

Most people don't go home in slightly less than 4 days, but FOLLOW THEIR ORDERS. Meaning, having just gone through it myself, and my chest and ribs, which they sawed open and put back together with wires (they use the equivalent of "tree loppers" to snap through the ribs) are still healing, and my bones still "pop" and "jiggle" around a bit when I walk... the most important thing immediately after, and for about a week or so, is to cough often (it will hurt like hell, but you use a pillow to "splint" your chest while coughing). Coughing will loosen up secretions, and keep one from a build-up of secretions in the lungs. I could barely cough the first week or so, due to the pain, but eventually learned that, even the smallest coughs, especially if you do 3-4 in a row, can bring up tons of secretions, and you feel much better after getting that crap out. It is essential that this be done.

So best wishes to a fellow open-heart recoverer - go to Walmart and buy him lots of $2.50 bed pillows, so when he gets home, he'll be comfortable in bed. He'll be sleeping stricktly on his back for a while. I LOVED it the first time I felt comfortable enough to just lay on my side.

Anecdote: they say not to drive for AT LEAST a month (mostly cuz if you're in an accident, the airbags would bust your chest open again) - my doc was mortified to hear I drove my car 2 days after discharge... hey - someone had to get my car home!
