seriously, I just looked it up on wiki. says it gruel like the slaves and peasants were forced to eat. I dont eat those things but i'm glad the OP like theirs.

I did not mean to sound hurtful. Local foods are fascinating and wide ranging. If I were visiting your area I would be delighted to try some. I had something called 'rice pudding' in england which sounds similar but not gritty. they served it with strawberry jam. I cannot imagine having anything savoury with a dish like that. to each his own. good day to you and your grits.
