BLOOMINGTON -- People were waiting in line for up to 20 minutes Friday afternoon for $1.999-a-gallon gasoline at a new BP station at 1220 Towanda Ave. in Bloomington.

The cheap gasoline was intended to lure customers to the former Phillips 66 gas station, which reopened at 1 p.m. Friday after a year of remodeling, said its Bloomington-based owners, Rod and Sam Daya of N&N Petroleum.

"As soon as they switched the signs, they (the cars) starting lining up," said Rod Daya.

The cousins have used such promotions to celebrate grand openings at the several stations they own across Illinois, including the Bloomington Marathon on Quest Drive on the city's southern edge.

This was the first time gas has been below $2 per gallon in the Twin Cities since March 2009.

Customers said it was worth the wait.

"We've been in line, but for $1.99, it's worth it," said Diane Warfield of Bloomington. "And it's from BP, so it's like they're paying us back (for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico)."

Traffic was backed up on Towanda, but not as far as Empire Street to the south or Emerson Street to the north. Police were called in to monitor traffic.
