DEBTORS PRISON NOW IN THE UNITED STATES!
First Obamavilles, Now Debtors Prisons!

Another sign of the times: Debtors are being jailed, in record numbers, for failing to pay credit card and other debts, which have been taken over by debt collection agencies, that buy up uncollected consumer debts at pennies on the dollar, and abuse an already stressed law enforcement and judicial system, to force debt payments by getting people arrested and jailed. On July 9, the Minneapolis Star Tribune published a lengthy expose of just such debtor prison policies in Minnesota, and in other states around the country, including Arkansas, Arizona, and Washington. "In Illinois and southwest Indiana, some judges jail debtors for missing court-ordered debt payments. In extreme cases, people stay in jail until they raise a minimum payment. In January, a judge sentenced a Kenney, Ill., man 'to indefinite incarceration' until he came up with $300 toward a lumber yard debt," the Star Tribune reported. "The laws allowing for the arrest of someone for an unpaid debt are not new. What is new is the rise of well-funded, aggressive and centralized collection firms, in many cases run by attorneys, that buy up unpaid debt and use the courts to collect."

The report cited three Minnesota companies that have been driving the new debtors prison schemes: Unifund CCR Partners, Portfolio Recovery Associates Inc. and Debt Equities LLC. Portfolio Recovery Associates, based in Norfolk, Va., is a publicly traded company, which earned $44 million in profits in 2009, on $281 million in revenue—i.e., collections.

This is incredibly bogus! Someone tried posting a similar report last week and I will have to repeat what I said:

debtors do NOT go to jail for owing money. They can, however, go to jail if they ignore a court order. There is no such thing as a "debtor" prison. Period. End of story.

That's because the US judicial system is so corrupt that it may take the entire system to crash in order to restore some semblance of justice and law.

Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

You mean a court order to pay money?
Hence they are going to prison for not paying debt.

Re: DEBTORS PRISON NOW IN THE UNITED STATES!
I was arrested for debt last October! The sdIcker part, I am a female with children and they brought 6 regular sheriff deputies and 2 ICE agents to my home for this arrest!
They blocked the road in front of my home and then barged into my home at 7am.

I asked why I was under arrest and they did not have an answer at first. After I was in the police car and on my way to jail I continued to ask and they said they didn't know but all they knew was they had a warrant!! I did not find out the reason until after the entire intake process!!

The debt was a hospital bill and the offense was not bond-able!! I had to pay the debt in full to get out!!!!!!!!

This is complete bull shit and I hired a lawyer who told me that unfortunately they did everything within the law. They claimed that I was not arrested directly for the debt but failure to comply with the judgement. So if you have a judgement and don't pay it, you could go to the big house.

Exactly right.

I pointed this out in that other thread as well.

If you miss a court date..whether it's with a collection agency or not, the judge can issue a warrant for your arrest.

Also, if you're ordered to make a payment by a judge, and you don't, you can also be given a warrant for your arrest for violating a court order.

However, you don't just go to jail because a collection agency says you owe money with no court order.....so quit fear mongering, this has ALWAYS been the law, it's nothing new.

So did you attend the court hearing that created that order?

Or did you just not show up?

I'm thinking the latter.

maybe they are talking about this man:
Hassan Nemazee, an Iranian-American businessman who raised money for the political campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for defrauding Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc and HSBC Holdings Plc out of $292 million.

Yes. This last generation has been led down a rosy path of 'have it now, pay it later' fantasy and it has brought us into a very unhappy end.

Get used to not having, get used to getting by on what you DO have, quit living beyond your means!

Debtor's prison was a way of life in society for millennia, don't think it something new, strange or unfair.

Unpaid and abandoned debt is thievery.

Yeah, yeah. The bail just happens to be the exact amount of the debt owed and is forfeited to the complainant. Funny that.
