The Demise of Chicago´s Oldies 104.3
Hey Everyone,
Well, Infinity Broadcasting has done it again. They have replaced Oldies 104.3 WJMK-FM with JACK-FM. A new radio station with music from the 70´s to 2005. I have typed a letter to Infinity which I will be also sending to other Infinity radio stations, Clear Channel and other news and newspaper outlets in Chicago and around the country. I love Sirius and I just can´t believe that these companies still don´t get it. I used to listen to WJMK all the time before my switch to Sirius. Actually, I still used to listen to it. I am very sad that Infinity is making such bad decisions.

Here is my letter:

June 6, 2005
In regards to: WJMK-104.3FM

Infinity Broadcasting
1515 Broadway, 46th Floor
New York, NY 10036

To Whom It May Concern:
On Friday June 3, 2005 104.3 WJMK “Greatest Hits of the 60’s and 70’s” became Jack-FM. I was very disappointed to learn about this change. Thousands of Chicago and suburban residents have either grown up or have been listening to Oldies 104.3 for decades now.
When will big radio corporations such as Infinity Broadcasting and Clear Channel learn that FM and AM radio is suffering right now. Commercials have taken over the radio dial and radio has become a voice for big and small companies by way of advertisements. Why has satellite radio such as XM and Sirius become so successful? Let me fill you in.
Satellite radio was launched about five years ago because citizens of the United States became fed up with FM/AM radio. We now have a place to listen to commercial free music along with un-regulated news and talk. The FCC has put such a restriction on what DJ’s and news announcers can say that the American people feel that we are not being told the truth. The fact is, we are being lied to on a daily basis. That is why almost six million people have paid hundreds of dollars in equipment and made the switch to satellite radio.
When will Infinity learn that as a company you need to stop looking to make a few dollars and give people what they want. I am not saying that every radio station needs to be commercial free because radio stations need to generate revenue as well. Stop throwing commercials down our throats and give us music and more than 10 minutes an hour. The airwaves of Infinity radio stations around the country are almost completely commercials with a few minutes an hour of music.
However, I do compliment Clear Channel for working on cleaning up its airwaves of commercials and talk. See, Clear Channel Communications saw what is the slow demise of FM/AM and is working to solve some of the problems. I have noticed this by listening to CC stations that the airwaves of many stations in Chicago have been cleaned up and much more music and even a larger variety of music are being played.
So, my question to you is this: When will Infinity wake up and see what is happening to traditional radio? I can tell you one thing, Jack-FM is not the answer to solve the problem.
My plea to you is this: Bring back WJMK 104.3 “Greatest Hits of the 60’s and 70’s.” to the airwave in Chicago. I also find that having WJMK online at www.wjmk.com is absolutely absurd. What about people that want to listen to Oldies on the way to work and on the drive home? I don’t know about you, but I don’t have an active internet connection in my car. I always enjoyed listening to the funny morning show with Paul Perry and friends along with the necessary traffic, news and weather. I understand that WJMK did not have the best ratings in Chicago, however thousands of people listened and enjoyed Chicago’s favorite Oldies station and the ratings were on the rise. This is a huge mistake in my mind and in the minds of many fellow Chicagoland WJMK listeners.
Thank you for your time and taking this matter into consideration. All I ask is to improve FM/AM radio not only in Chicago but around the country and the first start is to do the right thing and put WJMK 104.3 back on the air.

Sincerely,
Scott Ulbrich

They just did the exact same thing with WCBS in New York. No warning, they just changed format in the middle of the day. And WCBS was already #8 in the metropolitan market -- if you know how many stations there are here, you have to wonder how much better they realistically think they can do?
