Senate Cuts Food Stamp Funds; Leaves Oil and Gas Subsidies Intact
[link to food.change.org]

America's poor rarely catch a break these days. The Senate is expected to vote today for a bill that will cut food stamp benefits by $6.1 billion to help fund Medicaid and teachers' jobs, reasoning they were too high now that food costs are lower than predicted. Proponents essentially argued that poor people had too much money for food.

As the Washington Post's Ezra Klein explains, last year's federal Recovery Act increased the amount of money for food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), to about $80 more per household each month. Amid the recession and high unemployment, about six million more people registered for the program in the past year alone, so program costs boomed from $20 billion to $65 billion. Meanwhile, food prices have deflated from last year's high rates. Now people are able to get more bang for their buck, hence the Senate's idea to cut payments. It's frustrating not only because America's poor, working, and middle class are suffering at record levels and could use this tiny leg up, but also because it's a really stupid cut for the overall economic picture: According to Klein, food stamps serve as one of the best forms of stimulus money, to the tune of $1.70 of activity for every dollar spent. In other words, our economy desperately needs this.

You are kinda right.
I'd rather this money end up in the hands of citizens instead of our government wasting it on hookers, sex slaves, or handing it to the DOD, so they can build more cruise missiles.

Some food stamp math:

With a gross income of 800.00 a month, I have been eligible for food stamps for several years now, but only just finally caved and applied to go on them recently.

It took a long time to wrap my head around the concept but I got sick of seeing ads on the bus all the time saying "You may be eligible! Apply now! Your citizenship status doesn't matter for the state portion of the benefits!"

I knew I qualified for a long time before I decided that whether I "deserved" it or not didn't matter, it was just a question of numbers.

To justify it to myself, I did a little math, on my gross income of 800.00 I pay 60.00 in FICA taxes. Then my employer "contributes" another 60.00. If anyone cares to argue that the employer's "contribution" is not a tax on my wages, go ahead.

So in my name, on my wages one way or the other, the federal government is getting $120.00 a month on my 800.00 income. Then there are all the other taxes I pay, all the fees on my utilities, all the sales taxes, the share of my rent which pays the property taxes, etc.

The food stamp award I qualified for works out to 43.00 a week or 172.00 a month. Someone tell me how that's not my own money which was taken from me, but they decided that people making 800.00 a month can't afford to pay taxes, so they give it back, but only in a form that you can buy food with, as social engineering.

I need my money back that I worked to make, to live on, to survive. I should have done this long ago. I am a fifty year old single woman. I have worked retail for many years, I have seen a lot of women out there spending their husband's money. I never had that, it's always just been me. I am glad I took steps to take care of myself and secure my own income back from those who would take it from me. I need it! They can't have it.

Oh, and P.S. They told me I would have to make another 400.00 a month before anything would be re-evaluated, I could make a lot more than I do and still qualify for the 43.00 award.

Why can I picture, with ease, everyone in the senate giving a resounding "FUCK THE POOR!", complete with appropriate hand gesture?
Well it seems so real I can see it
And it seems so real I can feel it
And it seems so real I can taste it
And it seems so real I can hear it
So why can't I touch it?
So why can't I touch it?

Well my neighbor is going to college on student loans, his wife works at a daycare center full time, one kid goes there free cause she works there, the other is in school and they pull in 700.00 a month in food stamps, which is now a debit card. They can only buy food items that are not premade such as fried chicken in the deli dept would be a no-no. Anyway, they spend about 400 a month on food, since both kids and wife are also on the free lunch programs at the schools, as well as medicaid, and she sells the other 300. each month for as she puts it fuck you money. That pisses me off. They eat better than we do sometimes, my husband is a self employed carpenter, and I am a realtor. My business income has decreased about 70% and his has decreased by about 40%. We dont collect any type of unemployment or any other type of subsidy, watch our pennies, and pay our taxes so my neighbor can have fuck you money. I wonder if she knows I took that personal!

Re: Senate Cuts Food Stamp Funds; Leaves Oil and Gas Subsidies Intact
I think food stamps should be only for those who choose to work to help support themselves and the disabled. Upper lower and lower middle class families are those that need this benefit. And Furthermore I think all government benefits except those received for disability or social security should be reported as income on income taxes, ie. energy assistance, food stamps, healthcare for children, housing subsidies, free school lunches, etc. The poor who receive all these benefits live better than the working class americans, the value of their benefits in dollars if reported as income would put some of these recipients over the income limits for assistance. And to add insult to injury many of those receiving handouts get several thousands of dollars back on their income taxes due to not having much income in real dollars. For the family who makes only several hundred dollars over the income limits, sometimes it is financially to their advantage to work less or not at all and qualify for government benefits.

I have not seen any drop in the price of anything in any of the grocery stores around me....

Food for thought; when the O man eats one 12 ounce Japanese kobe beef steak, the tax payer class including yourself pays for the whole cow... even if you save up all your food stamps for the next twelve years, I doubt you'll ever eat what the elite eat, too bad if you did and became obese... then the Gobbermint would be tracking you, actually they will by 2014, see the thread at GLP...

Re: Senate Cuts Food Stamp Funds; Leaves Oil and Gas Subsidies Intact
I wonder where they get their food prices at?

I have not seen any drop in the price of anything in any of the grocery stores around me....

We skimp all over the place and have to go to 3-4 different stores just to get our monies worth in groceries...

I do agree on this point. Groceries are a lot higher this year compared to last.
