Hang on, it'll only get worse. At my last place, I had an architecture student roomie (he was a failure really, but nevermind), and I wanted a bike to get around to work downtown. I ended up just walking 40-45 minutes each way and being fine with that, but anyway, I went to a recycled bike shop and got a shitty $50 fixed gear bike. He would not stop commenting on how cool it was that I got a fixed gear bike, and that I got lots of rep with people just by having that. I don't...what? I just bought a fucking bicycle, and I didn't even like it. Some acting like buying old shit is something great, just because your baby-boomer parents (however his are Asian and are just careful with money otherwise) can give you anything you want, and you need to find a way to rebel against even THAT. I think the only solutions are either to give them each an individual sobering experience (like a trip with no money to an impoverished country, or a forced wilderness survival experience alone), or a shot in the head. These may be the only ways to treat the hipster virus. |
