Autism and the Amish
The Age of Autism: One in 15,000 Amish
By DAN OLMSTED

WASHINGTON, June 8 (UPI) -- The autism rate for U.S. children is 1 in 166, according to the federal government. The autism rate for the Amish around Middlefield, Ohio, is 1 in 15,000, according to Dr. Heng Wang.

He means that literally: Of 15,000 Amish who live near Middlefield, Wang is aware of just one who has autism. If that figure is anywhere near correct, the autism rate in that community is astonishingly low.

Wang is the medical director, and a physician and researcher, at the DDC Clinic for Special Needs Children, created three years ago to treat the Amish in northeastern Ohio.

"I take care of all the children with special needs," he said, putting him in a unique position to observe autism. The one case Wang has identified is a 12-year-old boy.

Like stitchwork in an Amish quilt, Wang´s comments extend a pattern first identified by United Press International in the Pennsylvania Dutch country around Lancaster, Pa.

-- A Lancaster doctor who has treated thousands of Amish for nearly a quarter-century said he had never seen any autism. "We´re right in the heart of Amish country and seeing none -- and that´s just the way it is," that doctor said last month.

-- An Amish-Mennonite mother with an adopted autistic child said she was aware of only two other children with the disorder. "It is so much more rare among our people," she said.

-- UPI also found scant evidence of autism among the Amish in Indiana and Kentucky, two other states with sizable Amish settlements.

Ohio, with the nation´s largest Amish population, appears no different. Asked if he thinks the autism rate among the Amish is low, Wang said: "I would agree with that. In this country, the Amish have less autism. Why? That´s a very interesting topic. I think people need to look into it to do more research. This is something we could learn from."

The Amish are cannibals, did you know that? Maybe itīs something they DO, rather than NOT DO, that keeps the autism at bay. Maybe they beat the autism out of their kids. Maybe itīs all that inbreeding. Who fucking knows? Itīs just plain stupid to assume a causal link between the two.

Re: Autism and the Amish
Most Amish do not vaccinate their children. The one child who is autistic in the sample of 15,000 did have the usual routine childhood vaccinations.

Non-Amish, who always get the childhood vaccinations, result in 1 out of every 186 children being autistic.

lol 6612, long as you vaccinate, my children have a MUCH lesser chance at rubella AND autism. Please do, keep it up.

I think it is as simple as their food sourced. They eat everything fresh. No frozen foods, no processed foods..everything from the garden or farm and hand prepared by Mom.

They work hard, even the children, they eat no junk foods.

Simply put, their way of life does not expose them to the chemicals and energy sources that we have in the rest of the US.

Re: Autism and the Amish
They may not have autism but they have a huge incidence of genetic diseases because of inbreeding in their small population. They all can trace their ancestry back to 100-150 original members. 60 minutes did a piece on the problem this weekend.

Re: Autism and the Amish
How can a gene pool of 100-150 people cause genetic defects in future generations when according to christians we all descended from just 2. Personally I think thatīs shit but millions of otherwise intelligent people actually believe it and more.

The vaccine link sounds like an interesting idea, it is good to know that the Amish will look to technology when they have to. I admire their lifestyle and the fact that they never try to get coverts to their religion.

Re: Autism and the Amish
What causes autism?

Autism tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic link. Because people with autism can be vastly different, scientists suspect a number of genes are responsible. Ongoing research is targeted at pinpointing these genes. Some experts also believe that environmental factors may play a part in causing autism, although scientists have studied several factors, including vaccines, and have yet to identify such a cause.

Re: Autism and the Amish
Autism does not show up in the Amish community because they donīt go to modern docs and it isnīt diagnosed. When their kids act weird, they, and their community, just deal with it.

No reputabe scientist has EVER postulated a link between autism/vaccines/mercury, nor has any reputable scientist EVER suggested that any vaccine CAUSES any disease.

Most cranks associate mercury in vaccines with autism. They overlook the fact that no U.S. pediatric vaccines have contained ANY mercury since 2000--yet the rate of autism has stayed the same. In Scandanavia, vaccines have been mercury-free since the early ī90s--with NO change in the rate of autism. To anyone with an IQ over 65, this pretty much confirms that mercury exposure has any relationship to autism.

ONLY REPUTABLE INDEPENDENT SCIENTISTS HAVE PROVEN THE LINK BETWEEN AUTISM AND VACCINATION. SIMAILARY ONLY REPUTABLE SCIENTISTS HAVE PROVEN BEYOND A SHADOW OF ANY DOUBT THAT VACCINES CAUSE DISEASES AND CAUSE GREAT DAMAGE TO THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. WHEN LACED WITH POISONS SUCH AS MERCURY AND ALUMINIUM, THEY ARE EVEN WORSE.

THE PROOF IS ROCK SOLID.

Re: Autism and the Amish
When the big silver spike in price happenned in the early 80īs the cheap bastard dentists changed the formula for the fillings. Instead of 50% mercury 50% silver they went to 50% mercury 30% copper 20% silver; the new filings leak mercury like crazy!!!!//////It is a lie that mercury has been taken out of the vaccines. They just say that it has. All the independent tests show that it is still in there!!!It is made by Eli Lily Company, and of course the Bush family owns the biggest stake in that company. ps the occupation with the highest rate of suicide is dentists; mercuryīs payback to the cheap bastards!
