Hi folks.

Some pages back I asked if anyone knew what had happened to the English language Optimal Diet website that was hosted on netfirms. Couldn't find it on the Wayback Machine. I never heard from anyone on that. No prob.

I was searching again today and I found the exact same version of the website here: [link to www.homodiet.co.za]

This is a great site with tons of good articles, testimonials, and a 7 day menu with lots of recipes.

I was looking for the cheese pancake recipe. They are delicious.

Also wanted to add a very inspiring story about a man named William Banting. who lost 46lbs. in one year eating a high fat low carb diet - in the 1860s.

I have been trying to drink some kombucha. I am thinking it is sabotaging my diet. I make it at home and it is less sweet than store bought but I am still craving carbs every evening. There should only be about 4 carbs in a serving but perhaps it's the yeast. Is anyone here incorporating a bit of kombucha successfully on this eating method? Maybe I need to fat fast and get serious about keeping carbs at 20 for a while. My weight is still at a good place but the carb side effects are wreaking havoc with my joints, gut and moods.

Can't read this whole thread but I am 100 percent with the OP.

Krasniewski's Optimal Health diet started me on this path, about three years ago.

Paleo diet takes it a step further.

I was one of those skinny guys with a fat gut.

In the first twelve weeks I managed to GAIN 10 kilos while taking in THREE notches on the old belt.

Try this website www.fitday.com

It's great for keeping track of your intake. You have to update it constantly but it will figure out the grams of protein, carbs, and fat for you.

I have been eating like this for a long time. Yes, it works and I love to eat the meats.

Dr. Oz just talked about this today on his show, with the Dr. that wrote the book,"Grain Brain".

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
My apologies, I didn't read all pages in this thread, yet.

Does anyone follow a high fat, low carb diet while being a vegetarian?

I've been vegetarian for 5 years. I do not eat processed foods, refined sugars and avoid gluten. I was, however, consuming rice crackers and noodles. No problem giving them up.

I need more fat in my diet and tend to go with nuts, cheese, avocados, etc.

What are some things that other vegetarians do on this plan?

Thanks so much!

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Cardiologist Aseem Malhotra says almost four decades of advice to cut back on saturated fats found in cream, butter and less lean meat has ‘paradoxically increased our cardiovascular risks’.

He leads a debate online in the British Medical Journal website bmj.com that challenges the demonisation of saturated fat.

A landmark study in the 1970s concluded there was a link between heart disease and blood cholesterol, which correlated with the calories provided by saturated fat.

‘But correlation is not causation,’ said Dr Malhotra, interventional cardiology specialist registrar at Croydon University Hospital, London.

Nevertheless, people were advised to reduce fat intake to 30 per cent of total energy and a fall in saturated fat intake to 10 per cent.

Recent studies fail to show a link between saturated fat intake and risk of cardiovascular disease, with saturated fat actually found to be protective, he said.

Hi guys - trying again:

Nice to see people still following this thread and all the success stories. The worm is slowly turning and major cardiologists are beginning to realise what we have all been learning:

Is a high-fat diet GOOD for the heart? Doctors say carbs are more damaging to the arteries than butter or cream

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
What quantity of protein recommended for this type of diet?

I am believer in paleo / low carb natural real food but hear different opinions on amount of protein. Some say eat all the protein you desire (be naturally self-regulating) others say limit protein (use a formula based on your weight) because protein in excess of your daily cellular repair needs cause some metabolic problems.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 810909

No more than 30% of your calories a day should come from protein. Most people need about 1g of protein for every kilo of their ideal weight. My ideal weight is about 70-72kg so I aim for about 70-75g.

If I exceed that without doing exercise then I find that my weight creeps up towards the 80kg mark! Very interesting indeed and I think this is because excess protein is turned into glucose by the liver and if not used then it causes insulin spikes - in the presence of insulin you stop processing fat for energy and start storing it.

"The protein and carbs are the most important since they are the only two that can lead to weight gain"

False: protein has no calories. You are thinking the fat and in the chicken, beef, etc.

Just eat meat and veggies, think of carbs (grains and sugar, etc.) as poison

I lost 70 lbs and lose about 1/2 lb. a day - I walk 4-5 miles a day. I have 50 more lbs. to lose.
 Quoting: Jack 23825728

Actually they do - each gram of protein is 4 calories. But the first gram per kilo of body weight is FREE calories since they are not used for energy but for body repair in a normal fairly sedentary person.

Of course, if you are more active then more body repairs are required so the number of "free" calories rises ....but anything above your body repair requirements WILL become glucose and can become stored fat!

There's a trend change in thinking about food. Much more away from sugars, carbs and whewat, not yet all the way towards fat food, but the start is there.

You are not alone. I started this diet 3.5 years ago. It's been a life changer for the good.

It has been gratifying to see the discussion go mainstream in view of the ridicule I got from the people with whom I have shared this.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Started diet Jan/13 with a goal of reducing weight from 216.5 to 180. Dropped 30, felt great but just didn't ever get get to 180. In Dec/13 ate mostly protein reducing coconut oil and gained weight to 201. Mostly muscle. Went back to diet and dropped back down to 30 lbs off. Without going into any details also added more carbs to diet. Today down to 176. Lowest since grade school. No active exercise program however do have p/t employment that requires 3-4 miles walking 10 days per month. To anyone reading this forum and considering reducing their weight....IT WORKS.... Give it 3-4 months of your life. Wish I would have been aware of this 40 yrs ago. Very, very happy with my current weight and how I look.

Yeah i'm doing it again. Not many carbs but a lot of vegetables and some fruit. Lots of protein. I've lost 10 lbs. so far and will loose 10 more.

It reduces my inflammation to stay away from starch, esp wheat. I don't believe I have celiac disease, but I've never been tested.

I actually describe it as feeling younger following the diet.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I'm not going to read all 85 pages so I'll probably say some things that have already been posted.

OP is 100% correct. I think it was Sweden that recently changed it's national dietary guidelines to 70% fat 20%-25% protein 5%-10% carbs.

I've eaten a pound of bacon every single day this year. I've lost weight (30 pounds), my cholesterol is now perfect, my blood pressure is now perfect, my risk of diabetes is now ZERO. My risks for heart disease, stroke, blood clot, alzheimer's, dementia, fibromyalgia, inflammation diseases, mental degradation disorders, all massively reduced from not eating calorie dense carbohydrates.

This is known as a ketogenic diet. It's NOT Adkins. Adkins is much higher in protein. You only should eat enough protein for maintenance of muscles and no more as your body converts unused protein into glucose. The only carbohydrates we should be eating come from fruits and vegetables, and go LIGHTLY on the fruits, so much sugar in them. You want vegetables like Avocados, high in good fats, low carbs and WAY more potassium than a sugar laden, terrible for your health, banana.

You can eat all the fiber carbs you want, your body cannot process them, at all.

When I began this journey of very low carbs as a lifestyle the carb cravings were intense. We are literally addicted to them. I'm not going to look it up but there was an article in something like the Lancet showing how carbohydrates have the same effect on the brain as heroin and other opiates. Breaking the carb habit can be very difficult. But over time I've gotten over the "Sugar Hill". I still do a carb free day about every two months and each time I do it those carbs are less and less enjoyable.

Being in Ketosis means you will not get shaky when you're hungry. If you get shaky or light headed from hunger you are eating incorrectly, this never happens to me anymore. I simply get the feeling, I need to need something, that's it. But if needed I could go hours longer with no energy loss. Those afternoon lulls where you need a 5 hour energy, a coffee, or a red bull, GONE. I never need a nap anymore. I also only need 6 hours of sleep to wake up and feel amazing with zero need for caffeine. 8oz of water gives me as much boost as coffee ever did.

The key to Ketosis is to eat enough. Your appetite gets DESTROYED when you eat high fat and it's very easy to slip into starvation mode. I went weeks only consuming 600-800 calories a day. Sure I lost some weight but not nearly as much weight as I lost eating 2500-3000 calories... oh, and I sit behind a computer and do zero exercise, EVER and I lost weight.

What you're doing by eating fat and cutting carbs is you're forcing your body to use another source for fuel. The only other source of energy that can cross the blood / brain barrier are ketones. Ketones are produced from fat. So by eliminating carbohydrates you are forcing your body to become a fat burning machine, because it has no other choice. Do this, you'll lose fat. Yes, just like the OP says, you eat only fat you will be less hungry and you will LOSE FAT. Eat just enough protein for muscle maintenance and you will then only lose fat weight.

Yes, it's very hard in the beginning, but after you get over that sugar hill it's great. You'll feel better, look better. The best part for me is that all those calorie dense carbohydrate foods I use to love, all taste like garbage to me now. Bread is junk. Cake, junk. Oats, 50 grain bread, any wheat product, all poison for your body. Real food becomes more flavorful too. You'll crave water instead of diet sodas.

Good work OP. It's spot on. I know because I live that way now.
