Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1062081It's only hard to begin with .... once the body switches over it gets easier. I can't imagine ever eating more than 20 gm of carbs a day again. I never crave them and hardly ever feel hungry. I try to eat 5 medium sized meals a day just to keep my system ticking over. |

He is a diabetic and has had problems with losing weight. Right now anything is a help! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1026686At that weight as long as heats less than 340gm of protein he will be fine. In reality he probably couldn't manage anywhere near that, since protein (and high fat) fights back by increasing leptin levels and suppressing hunger. Its the carbs that raise appetite and make you crave more carbs. He should pretty much just avoid carbs (under 20gm) and not worry too much about the rest. His blood sugars will plunge and his weight will follow the sugars. Meat, cheese, eggs, cream, full fat mayo, etc to his hearts content - with about 3-4 small green veg helpings a day. Once he is down to about 180 pounds then he can worry about the ratio's! |

A guy in England ate only baked beans for a a month and lost about 2 stone. |

It is very shocking I know from experience, but it's totally in your control. Diabetes is, I believe, totally reversible over time but it does need self-discipline esp in the short term. I experimented a lot with my blood sugars and brought them down from 240 to under 100, most of the time more around 80. I have not used ANY medications at all. You can do it! I call the ADA diet the 'lets give diabetics some other conditions to worry about" diet .... Pharma just calls it $$$ :) BTW - you will see from my changing IP that every time I post, I get banned - Am I saying some things that someone doesn't like? |

They never seem to connect the reason that I look 'healthy' is because I supposedly eat so 'unhealthy' lol Always tell 'em - I am totally consistent. I did the opposite with the diet and it worked. What will confuse me tho is tring to work out how much everything weighs in grams, is the only solution buying a scale and weighing everything? Gonna be impractical eating out, LOL! Keep going! You will feel much better for it. I had loads of stalls. I think the body is rearranging itself and you are right about the detoxing that happens. I think that is one of the reasons you stall. Toxins are stored in the fat cells and when you break down fat cells they are released into your system. I think during stalls your body is making sure it gets rid of the toxins you have released before it releases more. A 'real' stall is one that goes on for 2 months. That means your body has reached a new equilibrium and you have to shake things up. I found the Atkins 'Fat fast' a very effective method for breaking stall. You can do it for 4-5 days (and its not too hard) and it will break a stall. Basically it involves limiting your calories to about 1,000 calories, with 90% coming from fat. It was not uncommon for me to lose about 8-10 lbs in those 4-5 days. You might gain 2-3 lbs back when you stop but you do achieve a net loss and it breaks the stall. Another option is the Candida Diet for breaking stalls. Most of us suffer from fungal overgrowth caused by eating too many sugars, depleting good bacteria through anti-biotic courses, etc. On the Candida Diet you effectively eat just lots of meat and green vegetables and take some of those Acidophilus capsules you can buy in health food shops. They are great and I always take them now after a course of anti-biotics. Basically the good bacteria keep the fungus in check (sugar feeds it). Antibiotics kill good and bad, hence why women can get thrush when they take antibiotics. Candida overgrowth will limit weight loss big time! I did the Candida diet for 4 weeks about 3 months into my weight loss plan. It was effective in breaking a stall. Good luck! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1062195Actually it's sugars, starches and fibre that cause gas - fats and proteins cause very little :) [link to digestive.niddk.nih.gov] The sugars that cause gas are raffinose, lactose, fructose, and sorbitol. Raffinose. Beans contain large amounts of this complex sugar. Smaller amounts are found in cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, other vegetables, and whole grains. Have you ever smelt the brussels sprout fart? It's not pretty!! lol Another good reason to avoid people who regularly have their FIVE A DAY lol |

That is very true and it is very disturbing. All you can do is take the path of least damage. Avoiding metabolic syndrome is the path of least damage at the moment. Metabolic Syndrome just weakens you in all ways and makes you even more susceptible to the effects of the other poisons. Avoiding substances that they plug so hard which are even more full of poisons is the next step. Things like coffee, chocolate, green and black teas, all those processed goodies on the shelf and many more. Anything they tell you is good for you probably isn't. Hell, I avoid their damn 'superfoods' lol At least make all your own meals from high quality ingredients and drink good clean water (or at least as clean as you can get it). We have a distiller. |

Nao. Seriously, I would really love some recipes. I can get cream easily, and I drink raw, whole milk. I also make my own raw butter. I don't really like macadamia nuts. But do you eat them raw or toasted? My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I can get him to eat some cleverly created low-sugar, high cream ice cream. I have also been giving him some food friend in butter. Of course, my focus has been more on getting him extra calcium, so I can use any help with the increase in fat. He definitely doesn't eat enough of it, he's always going for the "low fat" stuff (tradition in his family, he's been overweight for a long time). I do the majority of the cooking, so if I have recipes, it shouldn't be too hard to get it down him. Love chicken wings and they make fantastic broth, you can then cover the chicken wings after with cheese and have it in a nice dip :) Also love slow cooked lamb shanks, having the fantastic veggie broth with it. Very good and very yummie. Fresh and whole indeed! On whole fruit, I am not so sure. I guess if you haven't abused your liver, as I have for 40+ years then it's probably OK in moderation. Unfortunately, most of my blood sugar problems were morning highs, which are indicative of a damaged liver that is not responding correctly to control signals. I figure that giving my liver a break from further fructose damage is a pretty good idea!! Even then I think the low fructose fruits are best - I do use lemon and limes since they have negligible fructose. Others that I know friends can eat without problems are the low fructose berries such as blackberries, strawberries, loganberries, rasberries and gooseberries. I think in moderation most healthy livers can cope with minimal fructose intake, pretty much as they can with small amounts of alcohol. Unfortunately, by the time most people have reached the point where they are despairing with their weight gain they have probably done huge damage to their livers and giving them a break for a years is probably not a bad idea. We can pretty much get all the nutrients that are in fruit from other sources, without getting the fructose. |

Quoting: Sc0rp10n 1062159All you can do is take the path of least damage. yes, that is what I was trying to say: it gets worse. as you align yourself with a more spiritual life, the margin for error shrinks, you become more sensitive, and foods you once believed to be harmless begin making you sick. Food is really a vice... the problem is that it is just too deeply ingrained in people's subconscious; it is something that touches on a deep and personal level where an existential paradox lie, one that we are used to avoid facing at all costs. If you persist long enough in your quest for health, the path of least damage begins to coincide with not eating at all. Some people call it 'breatharianism', 'inedia' , etc. However this kind of spiritual stuff is only for a few. it doesn't work for the majority whose existence depends on a daily fix of poison. Every now and then I post some tidbits of info about breatharianism in this forum... Obviously, there are almost no replies, questions or comments, because as I said, it is a subject that touches on a deep personal level. |
