Laid-off workers in California who are in danger of losing their homes may be eligible for up to $1,500 a month in aid from Uncle Sam.

The U.S. Treasury announced on Aug. 11 that California will get $476.3 million to help the unemployed avoid foreclosure. The new funding is in addition to $64.7 million earmarked for the state earlier this year and will help 42,000 California homeowners, reports the Sacramento Bee.

Under the Unemployment Mortgage Assistance Program, low- and moderate-income homeowners who got laid off and are not more than 90 days behind on their payments may be eligible for up to six months of financial assistance up to a maximum of $9,000.

To qualify, you must be unemployed, eligible for unemployment benefits and living in the house. There are also income restrictions based on the county's median income. In Orange County, a single person cannot make more the $73,250; a two-person household $83,700 and a four-person household, $104,650.

The California Housing Finance Agency administers the program. It will begin distributing the funds Nov. 1.
