Re: Gulf Blue Plague: COREXIT + BACTERIA = MUTATED VIRUSES *now confirmed*
Why should this get pinned? It's a bunch of tidbits from Wiki and a big jump putting together a doom scenario. Viruses mutate all the time, (that's how they survive), nothing new.

Viruses usually don't have a chemical mutagenic agent like Corexit or high amounts of Benzene to rapidly accelerate their mutated DNA or RNA growth... especially in a warm water environment like the Gulf of Mexico.

Since it's nothing new for you, how about you move to the Gulf coast and then you can let us know how you feel in a week or two.

I live on the Gulf and swim in it every weekend. I'm just fine, so take your sarcastic attitude and stick it.

You try to come across like you know something about chemistry, which you obviously don't - your first paragraph shows your ignorance of what you are talking about. You fail to take into consideration other factors which also exist in the Gulf and their impact on the whole. My grandson could come up with something better than what you actually said there, (from my educated viewpoint), ROTFLMAO.

I am no lover of BP, but you are way off base. Stop trying to scare people with bad chemistry theories. If you understood more, then you would know what the "real" problem is, and it isn't mutating viruses.

I am very serious in this request.

Could you please tell us more about what you know, and experience in the GOM.

Many of us care and are concerned about the situation and there is a famine of information for us.

Please share more of what you know, and more of your thoughts and experience.

Thanks in advance.

I respect the OP for working on understanding the situation, and I would be grateful for you to share in this discussion.

Re: Gulf Blue Plague: COREXIT + BACTERIA = MUTATED VIRUSES *now confirmed*
First, I will not slam OP just for trying to put it together. The main failing with the hypothesis is the fact that the Corexit is turning the affected waters Hypoxic. There are very few anaerobic bacteria that would live normally in the GOM and be a threat to humans. The aerobic bacteria that might or might not become more pathogenic due to chemical mutation will die, just as the fish and all other life in the affected waters are dying.

The symptoms that have been labeled the Blue Flu and BP Plague are caused by gaseous buildup of the corexit and other chemicals that are associated with crude oil. These gases will cause symptoms that at first are Flu-like. The reason it is being called the Blue Flu is because hypoxia, which is the reduction of Oxygen in the blood and body tissues, causes the extremities the show a bluish tinge. At higher concentrations the color effect is more pronounced. Severe hypoxia induces a blue discolouration of the skin, called cyanosis. Because hemoglobin is a darker red when it is not bound to oxygen (deoxyhemoglobin), as opposed to the rich red colour that it has when bound to oxygen (oxyhemoglobin), when seen through the skin it has an increased tendency to reflect blue light back to the eye.

A human breathing a small dose/concentration of the gases associated with crude oil(like methane, benzene, toluene, etc) will first notice dizziness, a headache, lack of energy, and general malaise. This is why it is symptomatically associated with the flu. The influenza virus causes these exact same symptoms for many of the same reasons. The cells of the body are not functioning properly and your tissue basically can't breathe.

A human who breathes a larger dose/concentration of these gases will experience the above symptoms followed quickly by changes in levels of consciousness, seizures, coma, priapism, and death.

Your Hypothesis is valid in that there is not enough data yet to determine the specific effects the gusher and the Corexit have had and will have on the ecosystem of the gulf.

Just a few words from the idiot who used to play with the fun stuff in the laboratory.

First, you can't claim "you're fine". Carcinogens often take a bit of time to make you sick.

Second, I'd be very interested in what the "real" problem is if you'd care to elaborate. You're right, we don't all live there so firsthand info would be appreciated. Being angry and lashing out at someone trying to put it together and figure out what is going on serves no purpose, either. :)

And thanks, OP, for this thread. I've enjoyed all of your threads to date. :)

Obviously, you never read the article and don't intend to because that's not your purpose for posting a reply.

It has very little to do with chemistry other than the fact that benzine and other ingredients in what is being called Corexit are either established or potential MUTAGENS.

It's all about microorganism mutations of DNA, RNA, and chromosomal damage.

The article doesn't say anything about BP. In fact, it puts the blame for spraying Corexit on Washington DC.

Your hollow tactics in changing the subject matter of what was actually written by debating about that which was never said is typical for hired shills. My ass you swim in the Gulf every day.

Re: Gulf Blue Plague: COREXIT + BACTERIA = MUTATED VIRUSES *now confirmed*
How convenient this is at the DNA level.....
 Quoting: check-mate 995101

Bingo. Someone actually understood the basis for the article. We have a probable chromosomal DNA RNA disaster ready to emerge (if it hasn't already) and - to further complicate matters - we don't know exactly what's in the various brews of dispersant that is being sprayed. Chemical mutagens can accelerate a minor DNA change into a replicated bacteriophage viral nightmare. The potential for the Blue Plague exists simply because the necessary elements are present in the Gulf of Mexico. Other factors may effect that in unknown ways.

What we have in the Gulf is no different than a laboratory experiment with no previous research or established results to compare it to. We have an out of control situation where the outcome is unpredictable.

I read it. There are lots of substances that are classed as "mutagens" that you are exposed to on a daily basis. For example, you are exposed to Benzine every time you fill your gas tank, and that is up close and personal. If I said I am no fan of BP, they are the ones that forced the use of Corexit even after the EPA told them to knock it off.

I don't think you are deliberately trying to mislead the sheeple, but I have the right to question your understanding of the science behind what you are claiming here, and call you on it. You seem to get cranky when anyone questions you on the validity of your claims.

When you say it has nothing to do with chemistry,
"It has very little to do with chemistry other than the fact that benzine and other ingredients in what is being called Corexit are either established or potential MUTAGENS."
what do you call it if it is not chemistry, maybe it could be classed as biochemistry, but still?
"Other than the fact"
your basis is on a chemical product and reaction - it IS the central FACT! The entire planet is a big chemistry experiment, even you. What do you call it then, Fate?

Go ahead, say I am a paid shill, but just because you don't like what I have to say doesn't make it true. Talk about changing content, I said I go swimming once a week, not every day.

I may die of cancer one day, but when you look at the big picture, 150 years ago I would have been dead by 40 anyway, so that doesn't scare me all that much.

Who knows what those assholes put in the corexit. I told you all to do something about it. Do you think they give a shit about you and your kids? They whole reason for the 'spills' were to get you all out of the gulf states.

Just like the 'fake swine flu', I guess it will take over a year for you all to figure that out.

Just as the OP article said, a bacteria infected with a virus is called a bacteriophage. I checked it out for myself and OP is correct.

The paid 'shoot the messenger' agents here on GLP tried right the the very first reply to smear the OP who has posted some very good articles here. Everything he wrote in this post is correct. Looks to me that OP understands far more than 90% of those on GLP. Just sayin.
