UK think tank: Intelligence agencies must infiltrate conspiracy theory websites to promote trust in government
Demos fears government terror strategy 'fuels mistrust'

Secrecy surrounding counter-terrorism operations is fuelling mistrust of authorities, a study by independent think tank Demos suggests.

It urges the government and secret services to be more open to stop extremist groups using conspiracy theories to discredit them.

A Demos spokesman said: "Less-secret services could make Britain safer."

The study calls for greater communication with trusted community leaders and individuals.

The report - entitled the Power of Unreason - says groups use conspiracy theories to recruit and radicalise people to commit acts of violence.

An example of one such theory is that the bombings in New York and London, on 11 September 2001 and 7 July 2005 respectively, were "inside jobs" carried out by authorities in the US and UK.

Other theories highlighted were that "freemasons control the world economy through manipulation of paper currency", that the UK government is "consciously seeking to destroy Islam" and that a "conspiracy between the Japanese government, the US, and the Jews existed to gain world domination".

The study claims such theories are frequently adopted by extremist groups to demonise outsiders, discredit moderates and push them in a more extreme and sometimes violent direction.

The report's authors made a number of recommendations concerning the counter-terrorism work carried out by MI5, MI6 and GCHQ and the government.

That's funny. Secret societies who's primary function is to remain secret are okay, but groups who strive to bring the light of truth to those same secret societies are branded dangerous. Shouldn't that be demonstrative of who is really calling the shots?

Cass Sunstein made some similar recommendations in a report a couple of years ago. That was pretty big news.

Honestly I'm skeptical about conspiracies, but I think this is a really dumb idea. It's just going to make people even more paranoid than before.

Or...they could actually start behaving honestly, and earn the people's trust.

Nevermind. It's easier their way.

HAHAHAHA

This will not work.

As soon as someone says something positive about the government, we're quick to jump down their throats yelling "SHILL SHILL SHILL SHILL!!!!"

Re: UK think tank: Intelligence agencies must infiltrate conspiracy theory websites to promote trust in government
A different option proposed was to basically do the same thing but openly - have all the government agents identify themselves in their posts.

e.g. "Hi, I'm an Info Management agent for the U.S. government. I noticed your post contained a couple of myths about Obama's birthplace - let me set the record straight:"

Wonder how long THAT would last on GLP...

The more intrusive they become the more I distrust the liars and thieves...no crime against the people is too great.

Disgusting-seems they are eating themselves up with the stupid-paranoid due to their vile and perverse actions-they can sell that batch of BS to some immature ones but not the older ones who have been paying attention...

They will cause greater mistrust and greater resentment-and eventually their egregious tactics will cause harm and it will come around full circle...putting their people at risk for the price of a big mac-that is the lack of worth all the common folk have-best figure it out-

AAAHHHHHHHH the stupid

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. What position? Why would I want to do all things for everyone all the time?

I just think the number of people involved in most conspiracy theories is suspicious... I mean, the people in power are pretty smart, and if they're going to try and get something done it'd be a bad idea to rely on 1000 people all keeping quiet about it. Better to do smaller, less obvious manipulations.

But that's just a difference of perspective, I think.
