Yep, I should probably order a new one myself, mine is so dog-earred and stained, it has been well-used.

Mine is "The Herb Book" by John Lust. Great cross-referencing between uses, botanical names, common names, preparations, plant ID, and more. I am on my third copy in 30 years and it is starting to come apart!

Does that include how to extract essential oils, etc.?

My garden is full of echinicia, milk thistle, lemon balm and so on but I have no clue what to do with it all.

"Back To Eden" by Jethro Kloss - it's an older book so it may be out of print but maybe you can find it at a used book store or library - first published in 1939, copyright 1972, Library Of Congress Catalog card Number: 72-91906
Perhaps considering the resurgence toward more "natural" lifestyles it may once again be available, having been re-printed. Worth looking for!

It lists herbs, leaves, flowers, and roots and what they cure, and then does the opposite, listing the specific illness or malady and what cures it. Also discusses water cures, massage therapies, sunshine cures, how to make tinctures and extractions, dosages, etc., fasting, fruit and vegetarian diets.

Re: Can someone recommend a good book of herbal medicine?
To extract true essential oils, you need an extractor. I don't use one. Buy a bottle of Everclear or very good Vodka and (this time of year, anyway) dig up 3 year old echinacea roots, cut them up and put them in a mason jar-cover over with the alcohol and lid it-keep in a dark place for at least 6 weeks- You will then have a tincture. I tincture leaves and flowers in early summer because it has medicinal propterties, too, but the root in fall has the highest chemical properties of immunity stimulation. Just read about the individual plants to see which parts are best used for tincture and the proper time to harvest.
