I just saw a missile launch!
I live in Ohio and just saw a missile with 2 contrails rise up in the SW sky. It was visible for about 5 minutes and caught the sun as it was rising.

I grabbed binoculars, but it was far enough away that I couldnt see any details other than it had at least 2 engines as it had 2 contrails.

There is nothing in the news or Nasa website about any launches until Nov 1.

Sigh ... Boy am I gonna get it for this.

What you saw that looked like a contrail was just that, a contrail.

When a plane is coming directly at you and maybe a bit to the side it will look like as if it is rising from the Horizon like a missile launch.

The fact is ... the angle makes it look like even though it is coming at you and going straight up or to the side a bit ... in reality it is level.

You can test this by driving under an overpass. In the distance this comes at you and moves "up" until it is over you and you pass it. It looks like it is moving up but is an illusion.

Sure hope that helps but that is likely what you saw.

Yes, I have no idea what state it was launched from other than it was in the SW skey heading upwards towards the west. The last I saw if it was the setting sun glint off the surface of it at about 7:50pm EDT. that MIGHT tell some smart person how high it was.

Again, I could tell from the angle and the receding nature that it was LEAVING, not coming closer and there were flames.

I have seen enough rockets in pictures and TV to know what a rocket launch looks like.

I also watched it until it was completely out of view. I don understand angles and such. It was defintely receding - not approaching.

Here OP - You had a longer trail probably but since you saw it in "flames" and currently in OHIO the sun is setting below the horizon ... you saw a contrail and plane, glinting the setting sunlight.

Do you think it came from Wright Patterson AB? If Raytheon is testing at Elgin who knows what they have at Wright Pat.
I think the SLAMRAAMs can be launched on Humvees too.

Just tossing out suggestions.
