2010/11 The Coming UK winter , Thoughts?
So anyone's thoughts on the coming winter in the UK and indeed our neighbours over in europe (of course I've mainly been looking at the UK).

From what I have seen so far most people seem to be forecasting or in the very least believing or thinking that it will be a cold winter, comparable or worse than last year.

Although to add some differential into the mix.. There is also speak of a sudden stratospheric warming event, wherein the jet stream is stopped for a short while as the Quasi-biennial oscillation takes effect and switches the equatoral zonal wind between easterly and westerly.

This sudden stratospheric warming also has the effect of warming the temperatures at ground level significantly to, in england cause double digit degrees (C) in january/feburary.

Also coming up there is even the possibility that in the next week there could be snow/wintry frosts in the north of england and scotland as artic air is pulled down.

Unusual for snow in september indeed.

Now a lot of people have also brung up the atlantic conveyer, more specific the gulf stream, I'm sure most of you on here have already read about that, but if not, basically the theory is that the oil spill stopped it (it is indeed just a theory, proof surrounding the exact cause is somewhat fuzzy, you go conspiracy theorists) But that's not the point.

The point is, at least from a surface motion standpoint that the heat injected into the conveyer from the waters short time in the gulf of mexico has been disrupted and is bringing less heat up northwards to the UK and the west of europe. Some would correlate this with the lack of heat in the uk this year, but in my experience a small amount of data will not yield an accurate result.

Also then of course we go and look at the sunspots and the sunspot cycle against past years.

We do indeed see a correlation in the waxing and waning of temperatures in the UK in comparison to the sunspot cycle, although it seems on average from each solar minima it takes around 5 years for the real "cooling" effects to be felt, It's a delayed onset.

So as you would likely find there are people jumping on this saying that we will have a cold winter becuase it is at the right time for the cooling effect to take place, compounded by an above average solar mimina duration. (the average is 11 years, but looking back through the data we can see solar cycle durations fluxing between 9 and 15 years).

But as is likely when looking into the future of weather especially so far out there is considerable "uncertainty" and proper forecasts cannot be made as of yet, be aware that early onset winter weather or unseasable low temperatures does not mean that we will have a cold/snowy winter.

But there is always hope for us that like the cold, and always hope for those who don't.

Now I've heard a lot of reports of things like "snow coming to the alps 1 month earlier than expected" which indeed does give me high hopes for this coming winter, but also reservations about whether this is or isn't "climate change" in any sense of the word.

So, what do you think this winter will be like and also, what do you want it to be like?

Lots and lots and lots of snow and then rain and more snow
or just lots hail and lots rain
It has rained 3 out of 5 days here in the DK the last half year or something, it feels like that rain and more rain

So an 'average' winter you think then?
except we don't tend to get "a shit load of snow" in the 'averages' from 1970-2000.

So which "same old, same old" are you talking about? here's some past winters for you to compare: [link to www.netweather.tv]

Ouch, you've had our rain! Where I am, I've had hardly any in the first half of the year, the second half so far seems to be on par though.

Nope, although it is another thing I've been hearing a lot.

This is basically just me looking ahead to the winter ;)

And all the chaos that a tiny bit of snow brings to england these days.

Ah, an inch of snow! All schools must be shut down.

Slippery gritters, Roads to icey to be gritted, residents wonder why there are no plows.

"My car was stuck in the snow, I couldn't walk the 200 meters to my work" says loyal employee.

Those kind of laughs.

I doubt whether the cash strapped UK will be able to afford decent snow/ice defying equipment for this year... people here think that the last winter we had was just a one off....I don't think so, there's no awareness or preparation just the X factor and Eastenders.
Very sad.

I think it'll be the same as or worse than last year. Bit of a bugger, I had a Landy Defender 90 last winter, 35 inch off-road tyres. Was perfect for the snowy hills of High Wycombe.

Unfortunately that broke (on an ice covered hill no less) but I'm back in the fens now, so no hills to worry about. If it starts getting bad I'll have to treat myself to a quad!

I would like it mild but i think it's going to be so cold this winter that most of the UK won't believe it is happening, and with that theres cutbacks in the uk that you won't believe, so with freezing temps, and cutback you had better hold onto your hats its going to be hell of a bumpy ride this autumn and especially winter.

And earlier this year the met office scrapped their seasonal forecasts, in the words of Lisa fox from PWS "buck, buck, buck, buuuuuuuuuck! (Clucks like a chicken!)"

It would seem if this winter turns out to be "worse" (subjective perception) than last years, without any real warning from the major supplier of weather forecasts in the UK (the fact that they are so constantly wrong 1 day ahead astounds me literally for my area their forecast 1 day ahead has been wrong 80%+ of the time). Yes without any warning, I think a lot of people will be unprepared.

Must remember that the BBC earlier this year renewed their contract with the met office for the next 5 years. So there is most of the average person's weather forecast right there.

The thing is, go look through the past records of winters (i posted the link above somewhere) this last winter wasn't a one off, It's just what is normal.

We've had 30-40 years to become adjusted to "normal winters" when in fact it would seem that those winters are not "normal". (not saying climate change, I'm sticking with natural variance).

As long as I'm in the house - and out of this caravan, I don't care what it does (within reason!). Last winter was cold, hard work..

FWIW, I reckon it might be a hard one this year. The leaves are already dropping here. The Hawthorn is full of Haws - and the birdies all seem to be stocking up already.
