Nothing can detract from the fact that monks live very unproductive lives.

They meditate, live on charity, have no skills and jobs.

Man I wish I could find his spot. My old meditation spot was wonderful, I could slip out of my mind for half the day there but since I moved I can't find a place where the energies feel "right" I guess, can only achieve good meditation for a half hour or so now.

lol are you ignorant? Monks make all kinds of things, their skills in their chosen craft are very well known. Now, if by unproductive life you mean they avoid paying taxes and working as a slave and live a life of true freedom, you are right my friend, you are right. I don't know any monk-related industries other than tourism; I can't see any contributions from monks in the fields of science, engineering, medicine etc.

Spirituality, enlightenments, mind-expansion, peace etc are just nice words... nothing more.

Buddhist monasteries are the spiritual heart of most Asian cultures, they are very valuable to the community and are prized by the people. As a Monk, he works to preserve the Monastery and its Buddhist teachings, especially for the community.

They're more than just "nice words". If Hitler had been a monk, wearing feet print into boards, the world might have been a happier place than it became.

Being "productive" and active is the normal state for most people on this planet, even if it's only unappreciated menial labor. We act, we do, we strive, and in the end we're all gasping for our last breath--death, the great equalizer.

The monks are doing something most of us can't understand, just as chess grandmasters are. That we can't understand it doesn't make it useless, of if so, only to us.

"Wasting" one's life doing something that wears away boards to the extent of leaving an image of one's feet may not be "productive", but it's not harmful to anyone, either. No towns were burnt, no lives ruined or destroyed by that monk over the 20 years he was wearing down those boards. Pretty harmless activity, if not "productive".

Wouldn't it be great if our politicians did something as useless and harmless as this, instead of feeding the fires of chaos consuming this world?
