Nothing can detract from the fact that monks live very unproductive lives.

They meditate, live on charity, have no skills and jobs.

Man I wish I could find his spot. My old meditation spot was wonderful, I could slip out of my mind for half the day there but since I moved I can't find a place where the energies feel "right" I guess, can only achieve good meditation for a half hour or so now.

lol are you ignorant? Monks make all kinds of things, their skills in their chosen craft are very well known. Now, if by unproductive life you mean they avoid paying taxes and working as a slave and live a life of true freedom, you are right my friend, you are right. Keep being a slave and making fun of the monks, they will just smile and keep meditating and wasting their life while you are so productive in yours making money for your slave handler.

Here's a good one ...

"To believe that meditation is only when the mind rests quiet,
And maintain that there is no meditation when the mind moves
Is proof of not knowing the core of stillness and movement,
And of not having mingled stillness, occurrence and awareness.
For this reason, fortunate and noble heart-children
Whether moving or still, mind is the continuity of awareness.
So, when you have fully comprehended stillness, occurrence and awareness,
Then practice these three as one.
This is how stillness and thought occurrence are non-dual."

No, I'm just being practical.

I don't know any monk-related industries other than tourism; I can't see any contributions from monks in the fields of science, engineering, medicine etc.

Spirituality, enlightenments, mind-expansion, peace etc are just nice words... nothing more.

Buddhist monasteries are the spiritual heart of most Asian cultures, they are very valuable to the community and are prized by the people. As a Monk, he works to preserve the Monastery and its Buddhist teachings, especially for the community.

short sighted... monks have been known during their chants to tune into frequencies that allow them to levitate stones,

look into the amazing healing powers of sound and frequency just because western medicine is so far behind in these astounding abilities does not mean they don't exist,

it just means that big phama doesn't recognize these miraculous things
i sure would be interested to see the cancer death rates of Tibetan monks, bet its virtually non existent

anyway go to youtube and look up 528 htz the love frequency ,listen to it every morning for a week, you'll have a different outlook on live,to be sure

Thought I'd seen everything but that's amazing. The praying is pointless, however.
 Quoting: Sir Marmaduke Tweng

Was it look at the state of the people in the Western world. They are Hallow shells there lives have no meaning no purpose
They are only happy when things make them happy and empty otherwise your lives are spent working most of the time with little time to yourselves other then 2 days a week spent at the bar partying or working at home trying too keep up with your pointless existence.

I gather that monk has more happiness and meaning to life in one year then most people in the western world have in a life time.

Fifty

Between birth and death,
Three in ten are followers of life,
Three in ten are followers of death,
And men just passing from birth to death also number three in ten.
Why is this so?
Because they live their lives on the gross level.

He who knows how to live can walk abroad
Without fear of rhinoceros or tiger.
He will not be wounded in battle.
For in him rhinoceroses can find no place to thrust their horn,
Tigers no place to use their claws,
And weapons no place to pierce.
Why is this so?
Because he has no place for death to enter.

 Quoting: DNAprototype

What a sad waste of a life.

"His footprints, which are up to 1.2 inches deep in some areas, are the result of performing his prayers up to 3000 times a day. Now that he is 70, he says that he has greatly reduced his quantity of prayers to 1,000 times each day."

They're more than just "nice words". If Hitler had been a monk, wearing feet print into boards, the world might have been a happier place than it became.

Being "productive" and active is the normal state for most people on this planet, even if it's only unappreciated menial labor. We act, we do, we strive, and in the end we're all gasping for our last breath--death, the great equalizer.

The monks are doing something most of us can't understand, just as chess grandmasters are. That we can't understand it doesn't make it useless, of if so, only to us.

"Wasting" one's life doing something that wears away boards to the extent of leaving an image of one's feet may not be "productive", but it's not harmful to anyone, either. No towns were burnt, no lives ruined or destroyed by that monk over the 20 years he was wearing down those boards. Pretty harmless activity, if not "productive".

Wouldn't it be great if our politicians did something as useless and harmless as this, instead of feeding the fires of chaos consuming this world?

You and many posters who replied to my comment have digressed.

I'm not saying anything negative about the monks and their practices, but wouldn't elevate them to a super-human status worthy of special admiration. Just as a reply above that says "what a sad waste of life" which I agree.

In reality, many parents in countries like Burma, Thailand and Tibet most likely say to their sons "sorry son, we are too poor, so you will go join the monastery and become a monk..."

70 years and all he has to show for it are footprints.

When it becomes that much ritual and not enough experience... how can there be any growth.

Don't get me wrong - I use a lot of Buddhism in my own beliefs - but really....
