Nightshade (OP) User ID: 599165 United Kingdom 09/28/2010 07:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) strike.attack took down the ACS site (it's still down) leaving lists of personal data revealed, and now republished in many places online. The attack was co-ordinated by 4chan members as part of a sting called "Operation: Payback Is A Bitch" which also targeted music and film industry sites citing revenge for ACS's attack on internet pirates as their motivation, according to the Register. The problem for ACS:Law is not just that the site is down, but that they have now been accused of storing that data illegally and are now being taken to court for privacy breaches by non-profit organisation Privacy International. Nightshade (OP) User ID: 599165 United Kingdom 09/28/2010 07:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok. A reply to the article on shiny says that the server was not hacked. A DDoS attack simply forces more data to the server than it can handle causing it to go offline. Once the traffic stops, the server will continue as normal. This was all down to an inept admin who failed to secure the server - leaving anyone who happened to visit the site able to download the unencrypted backups with nothing more than a mouse click! |

Nightshade (OP) User ID: 599165 United Kingdom 09/28/2010 07:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Andrew Crossley, the head of ACS:Law, told The Register the attack was "typical rubbish from pirates". "Big whoop," he added. "It was only down for a few hours. I have far more concern over the fact of my train turning up 10 minutes late or having to queue for a coffee than them wasting my time with this sort of rubbish." Yes £500K of rubbish!!! How stupid does he sound, now? |

Nightshade (OP) User ID: 599165 United Kingdom 09/28/2010 08:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Postcode check. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1112856[link to 34d.me] Oh mate just check my "area" didnt find anyone close to me but fucking hell how funny, if you know anyone on it then you know theve been downloading porn films illegally. Just imagine what you could find out about that little old lady down the road. Did you check your boss? The whole thing looks like a scam, with Digiprotect owning all the copyrights and then using these dodgy lawyers to threaten people into paying £500. Sounds like a honey trap, let loose the porn then get those that dl to pay £500 or face prosecution and the embarrassment of being a vicar/little old lady/ etc, who watches porn. "UK-based ACS:Law has enraged the more freewheeling sections of the internet by threatening lawsuits against alleged P2P copyright infringers unless they agree to an out-of-court settlement, typically of £500. The files involved are often video games or pornographic flicks, with copyrights held by German monitoring firm Digiprotect. ACS:Law is under investigation over its tactics by the Solicitor's Regulatory Authority, with a tribunal expected next year." |

I tried my postal code, it came up with a load close to me, but then tried it again and got: Couldn't resolve your postcode into a longitude/latitude (blame royal mail/google maps) Which makes me question, is this real, or simply made up? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1112856They are not "fines" they are civil law suits which if the people show up are instantly thrown out of court for insufficient evidence. The way the guy makes money is people either dont turn up and he gets a default judgment or people just pay. Yeah I know lol people just pay other people money because they ask. |
