... It's also astounding that most people today, don't know the basic "food groups', and what their proportions are supposed to be. ...
It's not surprising that people eat in the wrong proportions, because the USDA "Food Pyramid" said they should eat mostly grains! The USDA got the proportions wrong, and this was curriculum in schools!

I live in the NYC suburbs and things are still OK here. Real estate has taken a hit but things seem to have leveled out. Costco has a lot of inventory. Maybe analogous to your experience with "meat markdown", it seems to me that Whole Foods doesn't have as many cuts on sale as they used to.

Had a neat experience in the Costco parking lot the other day. A brand new yellow Lamborghini Gallardo parked next to me and I talked to the very ordinary looking owners, they seemed just like regular folks (but apparently with quite a bit more money), wife had bought it for husband for his birthday.

I saw a news story here recently that said the vast majority of people do not even know the 4 'basic food groups'....it isn't just in wrong proportions...it's they don't have the basic knowledge of what a 'good diet' is supposed to contain.
They are leaving out major chunks...like the fruits and veggies, because they don't understand you need a cetain amount in you life , daily, to be a healthy person.
That's bad education right there.
I remember being taught in school, about all that...there even used to be stuff interjected between the cartoons on Sat., about 'eating a healthy diet'...the lil guy with the top hat, singing about food.
He was great!
They stopped that education a couple of decades ago, and it is affecting the 'overall health' of our people.

Good to hear that things are still alright in the Big Apple...it's had it's share of catastrophy this decade.
