I have been reading all the dire economic reports, following all the destruction of our economy, but while driving around everything still seems "normal". It wasn't adding up, it was surreal, until I considered Bridge, WIC whatever your state calls them, cards. We aren't seeing bread/soup lines because people are buying their own free food. They are keeping the desperation hidden by giving those hurting the money directly (and more of it than what those got during the first great depression.) People aren't seeing reality with their eyes thus many are still skeptical. When the help dries up, S will HTF very quickly. No matter what we do at this point, we will have doom here, the only thing we can control is how we choose to face it.

Economy still seems okay in Arkansas for now. At least the high end restaurants are doing okay. I do buisness with them everyday.

As a fellow Arkansan (Central Arkansas) I have to agree with you. And to be honest it is not all that hard to find a job around here either.

Here in Canada, I've noticed that grocery stores have stopped marking down the meat by 50%, now it's only a 30% discount. It's like they all got together and decided this. Strange.

just fer shits and jiggles, go around the 'nicer' neighborhoods n' see who's hangin' their laundry up outside . .. that's MUCH more tellin' than your shoppin' 'habits.'
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 811871

Most of the very nice places/subdivisions will not let people hang a clothesline in the yard...:(
If they are air drying their clothes, they are having to do it in the laundry room , or the basement.

Personally, I haven't used my dryer since last Winter...and I don't 'miss' it at all!
I've had a clothesline for years...because I prefer the smell the air gives my clothes, over those damn dryer sheets.
It does save a huge amount of money on the elec. bill though!
You'd be surprised how much it saves ya, hanging clothes on the line to dry.
It makes me feel better to use a 'free power source' too...I know I'm not adding to the 'energy problem' and consuming a bunch of coal/nuclear powered energy.
This is one of those 'easy ways' to do both, save the earth, and save money at the same time...I think many people should start doing it today!... ;)

A couple of times a week, I just go to the local super market, get a cart, and just walk around and make myself a sandwich or two.

Eat it in the store, and then leave.

But that's just me.

I appreciate your honesty.
Are you doing it because you don't have the money to pay for what you are eating, or do you just like to do that?
I'm not trying to be mean when I ask....
LOL..My ex could not walk into a Kroger, without walking around drinking a chocolate milk, that he never paid for.
He told me he did it, because he felt like the 'store owed him' that chocolate milk, because they were so expensive on everything else.

I just find it fun to do.

Thanks for answering my question...:)

Doctors that I know are hurting. People deciding to postpone or cancel elective surgery, Podiatrists notice decreased business, Dentists for sure are hurting, laying off Dental Hygienists in their offices and cleaning teeth themselves(and in many cases, only folks who still have dental insurance even get their teeth cleaned)

In Idaho, businesses are closing right and left, especially food and decorating places. People still eat their steaks and most of the established places are doing fine. Local McDonald's is an absolute nightmare on Happy Meal Tuesdays (50% off). Everyone is looking for a bargain, that's for sure. Coupons are becoming VERY popular at restaurants.

was just in kmart yesterday stocking up on sale items and noticed that they'd rearranged the whole housewares section into "display" aisles. these 2 u-shaped aisles took up the space of ~4 aisles but only shelved 1 aisle worth of products. i only noticed in passing because it was annoying not to be able to cut thru aisles that had previously been there. now it makes more sense.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I had to go shopping yesterday...something I don't do often, because I hate to shop...LOL
While I was there I noticed something very telling about the 'state of affairs' people are in these days.

I've always shopped very thriftily, and used to be able to find great deals in the 'mark down bin' in the meat section.
There used to be awsome cuts of meat that I could get for half the price, bring them home and put them in the freezer for later.
With me living in a 'wealthy area' ...it was not unusual for me to find whoe legs of Lamb, or a nice standing rib roast in there...beautiful steaks and chops.

Not anymore.
The past couple of times I've been there...it has been like a 'fight' to try and even see what is left to pick over...so many people there looking thru it.
They aren't just taking the very nice cuts of meat...they are cleaning the sucker out!
I've never seen this happen in this area before.
I'm in an area where houses start at $500,000, and end up in the several million dollar mark.

When it starts showing up in areas like this...people slashing costs, and families 'cleaning out the mark down bin"...they are starting to hurt as much as 'the middle class' people are.
That dosen't bode well for our Economy .
These are the people that own the business' that hire other people to work for them.
Also professional types like Neuro Surgeons, top Attorney's, ect.
If these people fall hard like the middle class has...I don't think there is anything that can be done to pull the Country up out of this Depression that we've sunk into so deep.
Because these people are the last in line to fall, before the Giants do...they are sort of like 'mini giants', and they provide a lot of people with jobs, or jobs are supported by their spending .( like the lawn service people, the housekeepers, private schools, interior designers, furniture makers, ect.).

Anyone else notice something like this happening in their area lately?

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Indianapolis, Indiana are here.

Lots of home sales springing up in the neighborhood in the $250k and up area, but no one is selling anything.

We traveled to Texas this year and found nearly half of the billboards along the route were leasing. Anyone else notice lot's of blank billboards?

Lot's of empty office buildings but of course we build new ones instead of using the old ones.

Walked in Bob Evans on Sunday Morning at 11:00ish and was seated immediately. I always have to wait 15-20 minutes for a seat.

Everyone is asking for tons of big stuff on freecycle, cars, etc.

Empty parking spots in the fancy mall, last year you had to circle for a while.

My neighbors are still acting like there is no tomorrow buying expensive stuff like cars, invisible fences, furniture, etc. We buy used cars, freecycle, buy clothes when they are on sale at Kohls, and eat out once every two weeks or so.
 Quoting: Signs 1029269

Thanks for the info Signs....:)
You aren't that far from where I am, so it looks like we're seeing a lot of the same stuff going down.

I don't travel much, so I haven't noticed the billboards that are blank, so much.
But it fits.
I'm a sign painter, so I've been seeing the rapid decline of 'advertising' dollars going on ever since 9/11.
Many of the places I used to have as customers have shut down in the past 10 years.
The first to be hit with this was the little Mom and Pop places...then around 2005, I started seeing my bigger customers go down, like the Car dealership that was here in town for over 30 years, and had 5 seperate stores...they lost it all, and had to go into bankruptsy, now they have only 1 tiny showroom that still exists.
It's what has me concerned today about the things we are seeing.
The G'Mint nad everyone keeps saying that is's getting better...but when you walk around with your eyes wide open, it isn't what we're seeing.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Been a stay at home mom for years so had to be thrifty.Let me tell you the Escalades and Navigator moms are taking all my stuff from Goodwill and yard sales! The very same people who turned their noses up at me and my kids a few years ago are snatchin and grabbin at the thrift store sales like there is no tomorrow.I think they are worse off than we are cause they have such an expensive lifestyle to try and maintain.

I can't stand those little women in those huge Escalades and they are always wearing a visor and will never let you in front of them.

I know what you mean though. I've been a stay at home mom except for part time stuff anytime I could get it, and now I see those years of struggle as a blessing because our lifestyle really hasn't changed at all whereas for a lot of people who lived senselessly high on the hog, their fake wealthy evaporated and now they are having a very hard time lowering their standards.

Yeah alot of people are asking me now how I managed to stay home and when I tell them I haven't had a car payment with high insurance payments since 1985 they shut up cause they just aren't willing to give it up.

People are asses. If I ever have to drive my husband's '82 Toyota pickup (my dad's old truck, one owner!), people treat me like crap. It doesn't have power steering so it can take some time backing out of a parking spot. It's amazing how rude they are to me, but it's the price I pay to stay home with my kids. If someone wants to do that, they CAN. If we can do it on $12 an hour, a lot of those "how DO you do it" mothers can too.

My husband is like "if I saw a cute girl like you driving this truck, I would think "what a cool chick" but the reality is, people are total douches to me. They probably think, what is a girl looking like that driving THAT, what kind of LOSER must she be? It's terrible, good thing I am getting used to it and learning not to care. My kids will thank me someday.
 Quoting: Ice Princess

I know exactly what u mean .My kids friends laughed and called my 1995 crown vic the cash cab! Funny thing is alot of them would come home with us after school cause they didn't want to be home by themselves or didn't have a ride to the ballgame. So the slogan was "don't have a ride or no place to go , call the cash cab." LOL sometimes I really did have too many kids in my car.In the end those kids loved me and my ole car.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Well, WalMart originated and perfected the "just in time" inventory management style, and many retailers (grocers included of course) are copying them. It's successful and reduces the investment in inventory by a significant amount. Gone are the days when a small (or even large) chain of grocery stores had a warehouse for all their bulk buying inventory. Think about it.....every store nearly always has freight being delivered and unloaded, every single day.

So some of what we are seeing on store shelves are due to that, and some due to shrinking cash flow. Those food cards, the "food stamps" of the modern age, have a processing fee attached, and some programs take a few days to clear into the sellers' accounts. This also crimps the cash flow.

Most grocery stores operate on a very thin margin anyway, and make up for it in volume sales. This is why they lave "loss leaders" in their sales ads, because they know all too well that folks will come for the sale, but pick up additional items while they are there.

My local WalMart Super Center has already converted most of their shelf spacings to their own brand, trimming back the sizes and variety of other products they sell. Where the canned goods aisles (veggies and soups) used to be chock full to the back of the shelving, there are now just a few rows deep. I don't know if this is more of the "JIT" inventory control, or a real sign of financial stress on the retailer.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...

Listen to the first couple of minutes of this Keiser Report where they talk about the new customer trend at WalMart.

Thanks for the video...:)

It's alarming to hear that!
But, I can see truth in it, even though I rarely ever shop there.
I have noticed more and more people with the 'food stamp' cards these days.
Never used to see those around here in my area.....but they are showing up now.
I had to wait inline behind a woman using 1 of those just the other day.

I know I had a very telling conversation with a check out guy a couple of months back...was complaining about how crowded it was. He told me I picked the wrong day to shop...because it is the day of the month that Seniors get their checks, and come in to shop on the 'Senior Discount Days"
So, old people are having to try and save as much as possible too...having to wait to shop, until the day the check is posted to their accounts, and they are being targeted by the stores....like a mini competition to see who can 'get their first of the month money '.

Used to work in a grocery store in Northern Ohio about 15 years ago when in high school and the first of the month traffic back then was unbearable. Then I was disgusted to see the people who always had one full cart of food to purchase with their food stamps and another full cart of beer and other garbage that they of course had the cash to pay for but could not purchase with food stamps. Always had a couple of kids wearing expensive clothes and we had to help carry their stuff to their cars that were of course new and more expensive than what my parents could afford because they refused to ever live off the system.

I imagine today it is a different story and there are plenty of people who are really only surviving off the system. Just as was indicated by the story mentioned in the clip, the modern day bread lines are at the grocery stores at the first of the month. Generally best to avoid grocery stores and banks the first couple of days of month to avoid the hassle and the emotional drain of witnessing the real state of our country today both economically and socially.

People like you are why I shop at night, so you don't watch me pay for some food with a foodstamp card then check out how my kids are clothed and decide right there on the spot that I am thieving freeloader. Wow. Some people have nicer cars because they can't get out of the loan. They just changed the laws about cars like last year, so 15 years ago no one would be getting foodstamps who had a nice car.

I happen to hunt for bargains on ebay when it comes to buying my kids' clothes. That just makes me a smart shopper, not someone defrauding the welfare system. I didn't ask for help for many years even though I qualified, but my kids need good nutrition and unfortunately that is very expensive in this country. Junk food is cheap. Also, if someone is on foodstamps, hard working people, they should not even be allowed to relax on a Sat night with a six pack or a bottle of wine? Seems a bit harsh!
 Quoting: Ice Princess

I don't think he meant it the way you are taking it Princess.
That video is talking about how today, there are mothers waiting to buy milk for their babies, coming in and waiting until the clock strikes midnight so they can afford to be able to feed their kids.
He was saying that things are differant now than they were 15 years ago, and no longer is it just 'people living off the system'...it's desperate people that are starving, and can't help it.

If your family is one of those using a food stamp card...there is no shame in that.
Many, many are in the same place you are today.
It's starting to look like your family is becoming the 'norm', more than the exception.

Do you frequent those dining places often, or was it a 'special occasion' thing?
Some place you normally don't go to?

I ask, because if you normally don't go there...you wouldn't notice a big change in the amount of people there, or how they fare thru the weekdays.
I know there are plenty of restaurants around me too, most high end, and they too appear to be busy....but it's only on the weekends, and it isn't as full as they used to be.
Several have closed in the past 5 years.
The ones that always had a 'waiting list' to be seated, people out the door waiting...isn't like that anymore.
No lines, no serious waiting...just walk in and be seated.
Small tiny changes, that you'll miss if it isn't a place you go often, or drive past a couple of times a week.

I hope you and your family continue to fare well thru this disaster...y'all are luckier than you know...just from what I've been seeing...hearing from others in the area, and on this thread.

Sorry, Woodsprite. I didn't even watch the video. I only read the post under it. I will watch it. I just hope to open some peoples' eyes to the fact that needing foodstamps is no way to live and a lot of people who may have had good jobs. nice cars and nice clothes suddenly find themselves out of work and needing the help, and maybe they don't sell the car because they hope their situation will turn around quickly. Maybe they can't sell it because they're underwater on it.

I know people who were once against foodstamps or any kind of government food assistance now checking into it for themselves or loved ones. I look forward to the day I won't need them. I do get a small amount, not nearly enough for even 2 weeks of groceries, however, I am extremely grateful for the help. I think someday I'll be in a very comfortable place and I know helping others is something I will be doing so I definitely plan to pay it forward.

I hate the Banks and refuse to support them by putting my money in them!
I've never had a car payment...always just waited until I saved up enough cash to be able to buy the car.
Took me longer...but it was better, without the payment.
LOL..that also means I've never bought a New car...but it's never been a big deal to me.

People are going to have to quit worrying about 'what other people will think', and realize, it's getting down to pulling up the bootstraps, and jumping in the mud , just like everyones else is ...or they aren't going to make it.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
I first started noticing the downfall about 3 or 4 years ago. It's gotten so much worse lately. I just noticed one new thing about 2 weeks ago. All the car dealerships are carrying about half the inventory they used too. Take a look at them as you drive by on the interstate. You'll see the same cars there for weeks and weeks and half the lot is empty.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...

It's alright... I knew you didn't.. ;)
I could feel the 'reaction' in your reply, why I stepped in and commented.

In all honestly, from the sounds of it, you and your family are a great example of what we're talking about today.
I have a very good friend that just turned 27 yesterday.
She and her boyfriend have been out of work for over a year now.
The only reason they have managed to keep their own apt., is because they are getting help.
Unemployment, and foodstamps...plus her family has been making their car payment for them, giving them rent money .
If they didn't have the help...she and her family ( she has a 5 yr. old daughter) would have been homeless a year ago!
I keep telling her how lucky she is to have Family thats helping them out with the money thing.
She just told me last week, that even her parents are now worried about losing their jobs!
Her Dad runs a Books-A-Million here in town, and his store has the lowest numbers, of the 2 that are here...
Her Mom is worried about her job in the Health Care Indusrty..supervisors coming and talking to them about having to 'lay off people'.
These are "steady people'...have worked hard all their lives, raised their kids, and have been helping them try to 'launch a life' ...and now they too are looking at being in the same position as the kids.
It's happening to so many...
I keep seeing, hearing all this stuff, and it isn't jivin' with what the NEWS is telling everyone.
Why I thought we needed to talk about it today.
There's more people out there like you, than you know Princess.

Report from New Jersey:

Yes, we are the butt of all jokes in the US, but also the "melting pot" for a lot of reasons. We have almost every culture immaginable, as well as nearly every income level from poverty to movie-star/athlete/rock star billionaires.

Here is what we are seeing:

1. Supermarket meat items are scarce. People are fighthing (not literately yet) to get the lower priced meats.

2. Fish sales appear slow and I wouldn't trust the product unless from an ocean location fish market.

3. Produce such as tomatoes have been especially poor quality and we have chosen to get produce from local farmers which are cheaper and have better variety and quality.

4. Motor vehicle sales are at a stall point. Inventory is well over demand.

5. Unemployment is through the roof across the board from iron-workers to healthcare professionals.

6. Aldi's is one of the best food places out there and you will find ample Mercedes, Hummers and Escalades in the Aldi's lots.

7. Home sales are also at a stall-point. Many new homes costing over $700,000 are left half-built as either the finances from the buyer were lost or the builder went belly-up. Newspapers are filled with home sales ads, yet, no one can afford to buy. Homes that were only recently $1.5million a year or two ago are being let go for half that, and still not selling. Few people we know are moving, selling or buying homes where only recently seemed as if everyone was "flipping" real estate.

8. Home improvements are at a near stand-still. Licensed work such as electricians, plumbers, etc, seems to be working, however, I don't have first hand info as to how well they are doing compared to 5 years ago.

9. Other sevices such as printing, photography, etc, are all suffering or closing due to other options available such as cheap online services.

10. Stip malls (which plague the great state of NJ) are mostly at 50% capacity or rapidly approaching 50% vacancy rates. New strip malls often are seen with only one merchant or two out of say 10 available storefronts. It would appear that nail salons seem to be still doing ok.

11. Wa*Mart stores have restructured as well, and where inventory and supply was abundant, choices are severely restricted. Example, tried to find a nice tea-pot and there were exactly TWO items to choose from, one for $9.99 and another for $19.99, both of which were shoddy in quality. Additionally, the same high end SUV's and luxury cars are in this store's parking lot as well.

12. Major shopping mall lots are relatively EMPTY compared to only a year ago. Parking is very easy. The biggest patron of the major malls appears to be teenage kids that have nowhere to be.

13. I have witnessed several loud verbal altercations in a few banks with branch managers. No idea what the commotion was for, but obviously, more and more folks are stressed about their money and bank fees.

14. Pre-paid cell phones and pre-paid debit cards are hot items.

15. EVERYONE looks for the clearance items in every supermarket now. They will buy cases of whatever is on clearance, usually canned goods.

16. Thrift stores are popping up everywhere and those who are shopping in second-hand stores, like someone else mentioned, appear to be from ALL economic walks of life. Thrift stores in NJ are becoming mainstream.

17. More and more Dads are taking their kids food shopping and in my conversations with them, they are very coupon savvy and are stretching their money as far as legally allowed.

Will report more as times chanage.

BTW we just got an Aldi near where I live and that place is incredible, especially for paper goods and cleaning supplies. They kill even Costco & Sam's Club on prices and their stuff is just as good as the name brands.

Aldi is really a place that can change a family's life. Getting your groceries for half price is really a game changer.

 Quoting: Woodsprite

That is pretty much my take on the way things are today. Many people need the help and are using the system because they truly need the help to make ends meet, but I also know many people who take advantage of the flawed way that the system is designed. People I know will not get married before they have kids because they can just take advantage of the system by getting free food and school tuition paid for when they are capable of paying for it themselves. These are the type of people that are destroying a system that is designed to help people that really need assistance. Of course the biggest problem today is that most of our tax money is being used for corporate welfare to help prop up banks and corporations not on people who really need help or to fund essential government services.

Re: Something I noticed while at the grocery store...
Notice how empty the stores are at the end of the month? All the people on welfare & food stamps wait for the 1st for their cards to replenish.
 Quoting: Tread on This

That's a pretty crappy thing for the Store people to do...not stock the shelves, knowing that there is going to be a herd of hungry people in there the next day!
Dosen't matter where the $ comes from...it all spends the same! Or it shouldn't, anyway!
