The fire dept did the right thing.

The property owner had a free choice to be part of the fire district or not. No unfair across the board tax, with perhaps 0.20 cents on the dollar reaching the fire department.

This is exactly how it works where I live (rural america)- low taxes & you can choose to belong to the fire district or not. You can also choose to have a stone house with a metal roof & not feel the need to be part of the fire district.

This is how the American fire departments were established 250 years ago, and still the best way to run them -

Freedom of choice has responsability and consequence.

What about all of the property taxes these people pay every year?



theres a city fire department..if you could call the small town a "city"...but theres no county fire dept and if you have a fire the fee has to be pre-paid

i say at the very least they should have went out and done their job..charged the homeowners the whopping $75 bucks and then maybe fined them a little more..

hell anyone would be happy to pay a fine with the fee to save their home...




NO. The fire dept. wanted to make an example out of the old folks. That way fewer people will decide not to pay. Kinda like how mobsters run extortion rackets.

County residence are required to pay a $75 dollar fee each year if they want the fire dept to come out if they have a fire..this older couple hadnt paid..

the fire dept refused multipy times..and didnt come out until the neighbors house caught fire too because they had paid the yearly fee.

The local news media was told to leave after fire dept called police because of protesters.


sad sad story... glad there wasnt someone in the fire like grandchildren or anyone for that matter

I'm glad I'm not stupid...or cheap...Just pay the $75/year and forget about it...That's like twenty cents a day, so if you have to, just give up one cup of coffee every morning and it's paid for...

it's not about being cheap. taxes should be covering this. the fire dept shouldn't be a run as a business, it's supposed to be a community service

It took 2 hours for the fire to spread from the barrels to an out building then to the house. The fire department was called way way before the house caught fire. The resident offered to pay ANY fee regardless how high for them to respond and was told it was too late. It is obvious they wanted to make an example out of these people. They should have responded to the fire and charged them a huge fee, but still respond to save life and limb and prevent this fire from spreading to adjacent property no matter what!

They shouldn't have let the house burn down.

But this is typical of so many whiners in this country. They want government services but start screaming "socialism" when they have to pay.

Agreed. It used to be this way in the US. In fact people would put the fire shield on their door just so the fd would know they were good. You could always volunteer! That's how we do it out here, no volunteer would not help another volunteer.

Community is about to become waaay more important in America. All the people who lived under the old ways, where everything was taken care of for you is about to end, thankfully. Which will mean hell in the cities, but us rural folk should be fine, shit will just cost more. Those who get along with their neighbors will survive.
