Last night, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth tipped south and temporarily punctured our planet's magnetosphere

Nothing what-so-ever, happens all the time, its what causes our Northern Lights... It breaks during large CME's - unfortunatly, nothing to really worry about.

Earth has a magnetic field, too. It forms a bubble around our planet called the magnetosphere, which deflects solar wind gusts. (Mars, which does not have a protective magnetosphere, has lost much of its atmosphere as a result of solar wind erosion.) Earth's magnetic field and the IMF come into contact at the magnetopause: a place where the magnetosphere meets the solar wind. Earth's magnetic field points north at the magnetopause. If the IMF points south -- a condition scientists call "southward Bz" -- then the IMF can partially cancel Earth's magnetic field at the point of contact.

It's not just CME's - it's all sorts of things.

Yep, and after the equinox's in Fall and Spring it happens alot.
Only problem is we're in a rather active solar cycle!
A flare during Bz south could present a problem coupled with a solar maximum.
EMP could be possible.

From what I understand, it's when those funny numbers are pretty high and the Sun's MF and the Earth's MF have the same pole orientation that things can get wierd.

Can form a connected magnetic tunnel that lets stuff stream between the Earth and Sun easier.
Kinda' like lookin' down a shotgun barrel.

Not really, star fleet gave the earth a BIG injection of protons we needed because they are keeping the sun so quiet.
