Laura Wells, Green Party candidate for California Governor, stands next to Well's spokesperson Marnie Glickman outside Angelico Hall at Dominican University before the 2010 California Gubernatorial Debate where Democratic candidate Jerry Brown and Republican candidate Meg Whitman are scheduled to debate. (IJ photo/Alan Dep)Green Party gubernatorial candidate Laura Wells wasn't allowed to debate Republican Meg Whitman or Democrat Jerry Brown at Dominican University Tuesday night -- and she also didn't make it inside Angelico Hall to see her rivals in action.

Instead, the 62-year-old candidate ended up in the back of a police car on charges of trespassing, police said.

Shortly after 5 p.m., Wells and her campaign spokeswoman Marnie Glickman presented two tickets for the debate at security checkpoints and began to ascend the Angelico steps, Glickman and San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

Glickman said an unidentified man gave the tickets to her and Wells while they protested in a free-speech area on Acacia Avenue. Dominican required debate attendees to have identification matching their tickets.

A security guard approached the pair on the steps and asked them to leave, but Wells became argumentative, Rohrbacher said.

"The Dominican security had already seen her and they knew she was not a ticketed person," Rohrbacher said. "She had a ticket in her hand, but they knew it wasn't for her. Dominican said, 'It's private property, and we're asking you to leave,' and she refused to do so."

Security guards then put Wells under citizen arrest because her alleged offense was a misdemeanor and no police officer was present, Rohrbacher said. The San Rafael Police Department later cited Wells for trespassing and scheduled her court

appearance for Nov. 2, which is election day.
