...In addition, you cannot just go into a pharmacy and buy an inhaler. It is a prescription only medication. Does NJ even have a sales tax prescription meds? Most states do not.

Yep, sounds like CVS.

Yet they'll let you buy a bunch of cold medicine that creates meth, and owe upwards of 75 million in penalties.

I friggen hate CVS. Always have. Was sad to see my Savons go and be replaced by the crap ass CVS store from the east coast.

Re: woman having asthma attack denied inhaler, $1.99 short... SCREW CVS!!
The woman is too stupid to live -- it had been happening regularly for days yet she takes a walk without the inhaler? What of her personal responsibiity? It's all CVS's fault.

Oh comon Faith. I am sure you have left home without something before. But indeed something that important. For me it sucks getting close to 60. I forget stuff all the time.

I feel that not CVS, but the guy behind the counter was an asshole!

I personally think this is a BS story with the couple trying to get some money out of the business. I have never been into a CVS when there weren't a few other shoppers and store helper around. There is no way that somebody wouldn't have given them a lousy couple of bucks to make up the difference. Still, while the guy behind the counter might be an asshole, especially since this was a supposedly emergency situation, can you imagine just how many times a day he runs into people who are having difficulty affording their meds? Is he supposed to chip in his own money?

Having a son with asthma, a responsible person never goes out of the house without an inhaler. Not to mention the fact that the woman should have sat down when she started to have the first signs of distress rather than to continue walking. I still can't let her off the hook for lack of responsibility...that's what will eventually cause her death.
 Quoting: Faith

Ya know what, I think you are on to something here. Yep the woman could not afford an inhaler. Obamacare is not in the wings yet, but of course it won't ever help for inhalers.

We have a stupid person, trying to jump start Obamacare, which will never ever do anything for her.

Today, I heard a doctor friend on mine say, that he has many people come into his office with no insurance, and no way to pay, and they will tell his staff, that Obomacare will pay the bill. Geesus, how do you deal with people this stupid. If you turn them away, then you are racis.

Obama has created a fucking mess. And in this mess will be black Americans rioting and killing, when Obama is finally turned out.

Enjoy you stupid libs. You will be killed also! Dumb fucks!

Re: woman having asthma attack denied inhaler, $1.99 short... SCREW CVS!!
I have adult-onset asthma. Mine is rather mild in that it takes a few hours before an attack becomes life-threatening.

Still......I NEVER, EVER, EVER leave my home without my inhaler.

The current price for prescription inhalers is so prohibitive for me, that I more often than not use an over the counter brand. When I was in the hospital giving birth to my twins a few years ago, I had my inhaler clutched tightly in my fist while I was in recovery. The nurse on duty tried to take it from me, saying that since it was not a prescription, she didn't think I should be allowed to have it. I told her that if she tried to take it from me I'd make sure she regretted it, and then I called my husband to run interference for me.

I'm kinda with you here, Faith. It's a little suspicious that an asthmatic is wandering around the streets without her inhaler - especially if she'd been having problems for a couple of days. Not being able to breathe without life-saving medicine is a harsh but thorough schoolmaster.

You don't leave it at home. And you don't NOT rip it from the hands of someone who is trying to deny you the medicine when your breathing becomes impaired.

If it had been me and my husband, we'd have taken it from the guy and I'd have used it. When you're gasping for air, you don't "obey" polite standards.

Did I hear that right? The boyfriend said that they lived right around the corner, the inhaler was at home? So, he couldn't run around the corner and get the inhaler? Instead he calls his friend who drives an ambulance?

So let me get this straight , if I forget my inhaler I should die because a pharmacist is worried about a couple of bucks. CVS is run by " CORPORATE SCUMBAGS FROM THE TOP DOWN " they are not concerned about customers or any seisures taking place in their stores. How customers are treated is a reflection of how they treat their employees which is a system of fear, intimidation, and an inadequate work force with impossible work loads, managers alter time cards to deny overtime and offer little respect to their employed. Workers report to their human resource department, and are promptly fired for manufactured reasons to deny unemployment, lawsuits, etc. Under such an atmosphere and stressful work enviroment CVS offers to it's employees, how can anyone place their trust in such a horrible company to dispense critical life saving drugs and maintenance medicines ?
With something as important as our medicines we need to function normally or stay alive, how can you trust CVS with their track record.
CVS should close up shop and convert their stores to shop and goes or quick stops. All customers and former employees and their friends and family who have been wronged by CVS need to start posting their complaints starting here and stop patronizing CVS stores. bump

I don't know how any human could stand there and deny another person the ability to breathe!

The boyfriend OFFERED his wallet and keys until he could get back with the change needed. They said NOPE.

Dear CVS, your credibility is forever damaged. You just became a bad joke. Shame on you for not stressing to your workers, from management to shelve stockers, that the customer is the lifeblood of your business.

How are you going to fix this? Think some heartwarming commerical will wipe this taint away?

Re: woman having asthma attack denied inhaler, $1.99 short... SCREW CVS!!
Just after seven o'clock Thursday morning, Katherine O'Connor and her boyfriend were walking home from a McDonald's in Garwood, New Jersey, when she suffered an asthma attack.

"It has been happening every day for the past four or five days," she said.

Her inhaler was at home. The couple was near there, but a CVS on North Avenue, near Cedar Street, was closer. They went in and found the pharmacist on duty.

"I had exactly a twenty-dollar bill. It came to twenty-one and change," Jack Brown said. "I offered him my cell phone, my wallet. I said i live right around the corner. I come in here all the time."

He was told the inhaler with tax would cost just over $21. He was short a dollar and change.

"I said 'Can you just give her the pump. She's on the floor wheezing," Jack said. "I didn't know if an ambulance would get there on time. He said there was nothing he could do for me."

Re: woman having asthma attack denied inhaler, $1.99 short... SCREW CVS!!
I think some people on here are not getting that this is a bogus story/claim. Firstly, the woman had a supposedly life-threatening case and they were afraid she wouldn't last until the ambulance got there. So they must have tried to buy OTC inhaler -- which are OK for mild attacks just as coffee is -- but not for emergencies. If they had purchased the more effective albuterol, they would have had to have had a prescription. That is kind of like treating pneumonia with a cough drop. Secondly, why would a person who had been having attacks for several days leave home without her inhaler? Thirdly, if they lived right around the corner, why did they guy call a friend and wait for him to drive an inhaler over rather than run home and get one or call the ambulance? Fourthly, if it had been that bad of an attack, someone would have called an ambulance. Trained pharmacists (on duty at all times) would have that obligation. Lastly, if a person is rolling around on the floor in distress and the man is begging for two bucks, somebody would have helped.

These people are trying to get money from CVS -- I don't believe a word of it. These are the kind of low-lifes that go around spilling drinks on the floor at Walmart and then falling in the mess so they can sue.

We called that particular CVS after seeing the story on the news.

We were told it was a scam and the couple has called to apologize and the corrected story is supposed to be playing on fox tonight, 10-15.

I haven't found anything on the net to confirm it was a scam.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1131596

Im the Katherine O'Connor that it happend to...It was not a scam...The CVS is being investigated for the incident...I am most likely going to follow through with the necessary procedures...This definitly isnt a scam, there is camera footage of the incident...Also there is no lawsuit against CVS and I'm not profiting from this, I wanted people to know about how heartless some people are these days...Hoping that after people see this story things change...
