Seeking info on Vikings and pre-Viking cultures in Scandinavia
My ancestors were Swedish immigrants to Illinois. I've just started working back into my family tree to discover my origins...I realize that this is a huge jump back and I'll never discover any direct links to any Vikings but I'm definitely interested in Scandinavian history in general. I would love to visit Sweden, Norway and Iceland someday but right now this financially impossible.

I've pretty much read every Wiki article on Scandinavian history, read a book or two and am currently watching a few documentarys on the subject. I was wondering if anyone had any good sources for these subjects; books, movies or internet? I'm primarily interested in Norse mythology and pre-Viking cultures, but I always love a good, honest account of the Vikings. My next project is to read the Sagas, but those don't delve into the Swedes/Rus but I'm still interested anyways. Any help would be appreciated.

The closest Norwegian Consulate to you would be in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Norwegian Consulate
901 Marquette Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55402-3205
(612) 332-3338

Norway and Sweden used to be one country until 1905 and Norway said bye! Minnesota has one of the largest Scandinavian populations in the United States.

If you search with vikinger(norwegian) or vikingar (swedish) + Sverige, you'll get articles which may be read by google translate, like this one:

The first Scandinavians' descendants are probably living in Botswana.
