Tarot reader's lawsuit isn't about free speech

We sometimes wonder how many moons orbit the planet that American Civil Liberties Union lawyers come from.

The ACLU of Tennessee has filed a suit on behalf of Candice Wohlfeil, a fortune teller, who has been prohibited by East Ridge City authorities from continuing her tarot card readings.

One would think Wohlfeil could have avoided her present dilemma — or at least seen it coming — by simply shuffling through her own tarot cards. But apparently, when the chips are really down, the supernatural is no match for a willing lawyer.

According to Donna Roberts, ACLU-TN cooperating attorney, “The First Amendment precludes the government from declaring which ideas are acceptable or not. Our client has the right to make predictions, whether for fun or profit, without the government discriminating against the content of her speech.”
