The United States has imposed sanctions on Israel after a dispute over Israel’s sale of drones -- unmanned aerial vehicles -- to China, according to news reports.

The US has suspended cooperation on several development projects and frozen delivery of night-vision equipment.

An official at the US embassy in Tel Aviv said he was aware of the reports, but would not comment on them. He said the information about the sanctions had come from the Israeli government and not the US.

The sanctions have been in place for at least three months and were approved by Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice seven months ago, according to the reports.

PM: Radical gangs trying to terrorize Israeli society

Speaking at a conference in Jerusalem on Thursday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon slammed right-wing extremists for using violence in their campaign against the disengagement plan, calling them "radical gangs" that will be handled "with an iron fist."

Sharon told the Caesarea Economic Forum: "I make an absolutely clear distinction between [the wide settler public] and those radical gangs that try to terrorize Israeli society and tear it apart with acts of violence against Jews and Arabs, hurting the feelings of Muslims and their symbols, bullying and refusing orders. This is not the way of Judaism. This is not the way of the settlement movement. This is not the way of Israel," he said.

"We will handle these occurrences with an iron fist," the prime minister added, "because they threaten our very existence here as a Jewish and democratic state. This is how we acted [on Wednesday] and this is how we acted [on Thursday] in the Gush Katif hotel we evacuated. We will not let anyone raise a hand on an Israel Defense Forces soldier or Israel Police officers."

Hinting at ministers who did not condemn extremists for their acts Sharon said: "Anyone who personally considers this country as important, and has public influence, must stand up and speak out clearly against these occurrences."

Sharon on Netanyahu: "You will always find those who act out of personal interests"
Sharon also fired a few barbs at Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who was sitting next to him while he was making his speech.

"I hear how my political overthrowing is being planned, how the government would be toppled ... You will always find those who act on personal and political gain. This is a known human weakness. It is easier to prefer personal interest over the greater good," Sharon said.

Aides to Netanyahu said in response that "it is a pity the prime minister cannot overlook narrow personal interests, and doesn´t know to appreciate true responsibility such as the finance minister demonstrates."

Referring to economic issues the prime minister said "the implementation of the disengagement plan will allow the diversion of resources used for immediate security threats to develop Israeli society and minimize economic differences. This is the way to go - socially and economically," he said.
