Philippines (OP) User ID: 1003925 Philippines 10/17/2010 10:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Stay safe, OP... Quoting: Mister Obvious:1rose1: Thanks, I should be fine here, but this will raze a LARGE portion of the country's food supply. This food is also where a large majority of export quality food is produced. Many countries will miss the loss of the commodities produced here in the future. Separate science and government. |

Philippines (OP) User ID: 1003925 Philippines 10/17/2010 10:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1131454 Sure, but it is most definitely NOT 190 kph. it is going to sustain gusts up to 190 Knots. Convert that to KPH and it's devastating. Tree lifting forces. Separate science and government. |

Philippines (OP) User ID: 1003925 Philippines 10/17/2010 10:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yikes, That will blow a coconuts down! You have a prayer from me. Quoting: Sophie 1102582Coconuts down, crops destroyed, roads washed away, people homeless and missing/dead, flooding (hopefully it's a fast a 'dry' typhoon), etc. Separate science and government. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1121402 United States 10/17/2010 10:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I can't imagine the damage that is going to result. Seriously. I couldn't imagine how much wind that was....many moons ago, I spent a lot of time on Puget Sound with my Dad. There, I had to learn knots because marine forecasts are that way. I wasn't thinking through just how large a number that really is: 190 knots translates to 218 miles per hour. Here's a handy conversion calculator: [link to www.onlineconversion.com] Imagine sustained winds of over 200 miles per hour striking the US........... |

Thanks for the info, and yeah, these speeds are hard to imagine the damage. Devastating to say the least, and I don't think this storm will lose much steam over landfall. Philippines (OP) User ID: 1003925 Philippines 10/17/2010 11:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Its substained winds of 218 mph and gust up to 350 MPH Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1085309The gods must be pissed off ...... I don't know about sustained winds of the numbers quoted above, I said "gusts" without editing. This is according to the US Navy's JTWC. This looks to me not pissed off at the people in the area, but possibly an unknown, long term effect for the country. This will hit MAJOR farmland for the country and export commodities. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1121402 United States 10/17/2010 11:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I forget the scientific scale, but that is basically tornado speeds. |
Philippines (OP) User ID: 1003925 Philippines 10/17/2010 11:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And Katrina was "just" 90 mph. This can do serious damage. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 333904This is where it matters if it's a wet or dry typhoon. Some slow ones, like Ondoy, drop a LOT of rain and cause massive floods. The winds aren't the problem. Others like Xangsane pack a lot of wind that causes a lot of damage, but speed over the country without much rain or flooding. I hope and pray this one blows by very fast causing minimal rain/flooding and damage. Separate science and government. |

RUDDD User ID: 1117335 United Kingdom 10/17/2010 02:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Super Typhoon Megi continues to intensify (until hitting Luzon later tonight where it will deteriorate to CAT2.) Core pressure at 908mb and winds sustained at 145kt's. Once crossing the Phillipines it'll continue its Western track, and reintensify back into a CAT5 "Supertyphoon." |
