Re: recession proof jobs....
Hate to break it to you, but Nursing is NOT recession proof.

Go visit allnurses.com and talk to the hundreds of new RN grads that can not find jobs.

Hospitals are cutting waaay back on new hires. If you are experienced with several years under your belt, then yes, you will find a job.

You also have to remember that there are approx 500,000 licensed nurses that are not working at any given time. During recessions you will find that these nurses will choose to return to nursing to make end meet.

So as a new grad you will be competing with seasoned nurses all ready working and seasoned nurses re-entering the field. I know many new nurses who 6 moths after graduating have not been able to find a job.

Forget the old tuition repayment programs as well, those are being cut out all together.

Where you are located as plays a huge part in job availability. Here in AZ it's a real tough market. New grads are stagnating trying to find anyplace that is hiring.

The big shortage of nurses you keep hearing about only applies to experienced nurses. Not new grads.

Forget the glamor positions, NICU, PACU, ED/ER that you see ads for in the newspapers, those are all but impossible for new a RN to get.

As a new RN you are looking at LT care and home health. Yes nursing homes...the places most of us dread to work.

Check your market out, don't go by what the schools tell you, actually talk to other recent grads and find out how their job hunt is going.

I'm not saying it's all bad, but don't go into nursing just because it's supposedly a sure thing. Do it because your REALLY want to be a nurse.

Doesn't someone need a medical marijuana card for that?
Prop 19 might pass this Nov! and No card needed.

Re: recession proof jobs....

Is there such a thing?.....

I chose this career because it is said to be "recession proof" but I don't think I'm going to be happy in the nursing field.
I don't have many options for careers.

I'm trying to sort this shit out now before I actually enter into the program and give up 2years of my life.

Anything in the health care industry is usually a high demand job no matter what part of the country you live in especially nursing, but the field is definitely high stress. If you go into nursing it is best if you do become an RN instead of an LPN because more hospital regulations are demanding RN levels of certifications. Also, when starting out if you choose to work in a hospital you will more than likely be working 2nd or 3rd shift which many people do not like.

Well my plan is too only work part-time as an RN.
Maybe in a doctors office? or in a clinic?
I want to work part time as a RN and then go to school for Graphic Designing. :)

But, how much of a demand is there for a graphic artist? People need to separate a hobby from actual work that will pay their bills... I work in a high school and get this question a lot from my students...I always refer them to this site for up to date stats, projected demand, etc.

He's right. Learn how to graphic design using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and you will always have work. And if you can throw in some 3D designing then you'll make a great living.

Re: recession proof jobs....
If your talking about having a 4 year BSN for nursing then you are in a good position. If you have a 2 year RN then its not nearly as easy. My wife hospital is paying 1.5 salary + $20/hr for OT because they are short staffed. They also won't interview you unless you have the BSN from a good program.

I work for an auto insurance company. Although it may not be glamorous the pay is good and auto insurance a purchase mandated by the state.
