The six-month freeze was ordered following the Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 workers and released thousands of tons of oil off the coast of Louisiana. Tough new safety conditions for oil firms will reduce the risk of a repeat of the spill, according to the US government. "We have decided it is now appropriate to lift the suspension on deepwater drilling for those operators that are able to clear the higher bar that we have set," said interior secretary Ken Salazar. "The oil and gas industry will be operating under tighter rules, stronger oversight, and in a regulatory environment that will remain dynamic as we continue to build on the reforms we have already implemented."
