I have friends who complain about what some big corporations are doing to degrade our Earth. I know them well so I can ask them what they contribute to better the husbandry of the place that we all call home - Earth.

I have helped build compost bins for a number of people and it is cool to see them develop a lasting interest.

However, in many cases they do nothing. I've suggested that one simple thing they can do is to use cloth bags when grocery shopping. Interestingly that is the most disagreeable & I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's not masculine.

If you get upset with companies like BP or litter floating in the ocean or any environmental crime, ask yourself what you do.

However small, it is a contribution and it adds up.

It's cool to here what people are doing.

I don't expect this thread to last long, but while it is active I hope it changes the habits of a few.

I pee on shrubs routinely, thus fertilizing the earth.

Depending on how much I've been drinking it may be a fairly large gesture.

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!

I also use those canvas bags for groceries. Some of the other things I do:

When there isn't any snow, I bike everywhere instead of taking the bus or my truck.

I avoid buying plastic as much as I can. I reuse glass containers for leftovers instead.

I buy what I need, as opposed to what I want.

Does religiously recycling count?

Admittedly, recycling is easy because we get a separate trash and recycle bin from the local disposal company. We (two people and two dogs) rarely produce more than one small bag of trash a week. We fill up the recycle bin every two weeks. I think the bin is something like 70 gallons. Maybe more.

When there isn't any snow and weather permitting, I bike whenever possible instead of taking the bus or my truck.

Instead of using petrochemicals for fertilizer, I use ground up liberals. It works even better than pure manure.

Re: One small gesture to show you care about the environment is a start. What do you do?
I almost never drive my car. I ride my bike everywhere because I just really don't like driving that much, especially in cities. I even rode my bike 60 miles to Washington DC last weekend. It was such an awesome experience.

I also compost and recycle most of my waste. I'm unemployed, but taking over my parents small organic blueberry farm this year. I recently quit my job because I wanted to help out on the farm and I've become more conscious of how wasteful and consumerist my life had become. All I want to do anymore is seek inner peace through meditation and a healthy lifestyle.

It's strange because i don't really care all that much about the environment, because I think we're pretty fucked anyway, but I've just had less of a desire to acquire possessions and more of a desire to seek spiritual enlightenment. The materialist world is obviously dying and I can't wait for it to fall. Everyone should prepare for this eventuality. We will learn to cherish and preserve the earth or we will perish.

Recycle, compost, reuse...you know the drill. The smallest gesture might be that when it's yellow I let it mellow.
When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.
