Re: BOB (Bug out bag) gear?
definately include a poncho, hammock, some rope.

For those with a bug out bag, do you also have food stored in the house, for a longer period?

I live outside a small city, little bit of forest. I plan to stay as long as possible, along with neighbours, friends.
So BOB is more of a plan B.

sweet, i have four different styles of water purification and am about to purchase a berkey, i too found another source for those ceramic filters, and am buying up a bunch of those as well, that is a great price
for decontamination, i bought garden sprayers when they went on sale last fall, just use a bleach solution and water

btw: for some of the nasty skin viruses going around (mrsa) soak in a tub of water twice a week with a cup of bleach.learned this from someone who is exposed daily. it works

Good deal about not living in the cities.

I fail to understand people that DO live in the cities, yet say they have a bug out bag and a plan. If TSHTF in the way most of us are expecting it to, there is no getting out of the city ...... period.

But what if, the scenario is also of Martial Law, which is what many are expecting? Do you really think you can skirt the military?

Keep in mind, I'm not arguing these points, just bringing them up :)

Re: BOB (Bug out bag) gear?
Forget everything you've ever been told about GOOD bags. If you dip with a bag full of survival gear, guess what the only thing you're not going to be doing is? That's right...surviving.

Here's why;

Even if you are a MASTER of hunting and gathering, resources can become scarce. If you're not packing more than a jar of peanut butter and some powerbars (maybe even some trail mix) how long do you think that will tide you over? Answer; 72 hours-1 week. So I guess if you're making a 72 hour bag that's not bad, but if you're thinking longeterm survival, guess again.

My suggestion? I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere on here so consider it; Summer Sausages. Think a Slim Jim the side of an 8 person family meal. Its meat that doesn't reuire refrigeration or cooking and not lean meat.

Peanut butter is great too (one of the best survival foods) but it's not very versatile really and believe me...you'll get sick of it fast.

Tuna in a can is an excellent choice as well. Not only is it meaty protein, if you get the kind that comes in water, you'll have a source of drinkable liquid when you can't find anything else. For that reason I suggest the water tuna over the oil tuna even though the oil tuna is amazing too.

As for survival gear; I recommend a small but accurate handgun with 9mm ammo and as many boxes of ammo as you can carry with as much weight reduction as possible. Ideally you should be able to run for a long distance with your pack.

Add to the mix a painter's drop cloth. This will act as a tarp. It is exceedingly lightweight and virtually free. It is not cloth and is actually plastic.

Get yourself a mummy-shaped sleeping bag that comes with an over-the-shoulder carrying case and a bivy tent like the camo types you can buy for $30 on ebay. They are fantastic and very portable.

Tools; A multi-tool (like a leatherman if you can afford it) a collapsing saw (I prefer this to a hatchet. Less likely to hurt yourself and more versatile in my opinion) and a bag of clothes pins and some rope. You'll be doing your own laundry so the clothes pins will help and the rope has many uses one of which is obviously as a clothes line, but another is to string your food up in a tree to keep animals from ransacking it.

Other than these suggestions I'd also add that certain staples remain viable. Duct Tape is amazing. A small magnifying glass is amazing. A compass is amazing. The things you'd learn in the scouts are amazing.

So forget what I said earlier...don't forget EVERYTHING you learned about outdoor living...just revamp it. Think about it differently. I suggest you get your rations right or you'll struggle...bigtime. Add a couple of summer sausages and a box of rice milk. You'll be glad that you did. Rotate food stock as needed of course.

As a last tip, you can oftentimes find some really informative tutorials related to this topic here:

Re: BOB (Bug out bag) gear?
honestly, bugging out will be the fastest way to die. sheltering in place is always the best choice. make plans accordingly.
if you don't have a well stocked retreat with everything to be self sufficient for years on end, plus a large enough group of people, you are dead meat.

i have a BOB in my car to get me BACK to my house. i would also think about dispersing supplies in strategic areas along your normal paths. i did.

I have my gun, ammo, water, power bars (etc..), a change of clothes including good hiking shoes and camping gear. I also have an emergency med kit in the truck. One thing to note, I never leave my gun/ammo in the car but always have it w/me...

I hope you all are thinking about this as you never know when TSHTF and should always be prepared for anything.

And you can carry all that, plus weapons, for a possible great distance, at more than likely fast pace (if shtf badly), plus food (you think you are going to survive very long on 2 Freeze-dried meals and 10 snack bars)?

hhhmmmm.

Yes, I do. But then again the United Stated Marine Corps trained me to be able to do it, so E&E on the locals and weekend warriors is easy. In addition, I have fall-back locations and cached goods.

It cracks me up when people expect you to dig big damn holes in the earth and bury buckets of food and ammo.

You dont have to live in the woods like Daniel Boon... If you live in a city, you can still cache, and have relatively safe locations if you have some disposable, emergency cash available monthly.

I rent several small storage spaces in multiple cities and locations. I cache supplies there, and in several of the larger rooms, I have built a high bunk for sleeping. Storage on the bottom, rack up high for rest.

It works for me...your mileage may vary.
